    Default Palm vs IPOD..Help!

I'm trying to decide if I should get some Mp3 software for my Palm or just get an Ipod.

Does anyone have advice on this?

I've heard the sound quality isnt good on the palm but I don't know anyone who is actually using it.

What software should I get? How easy it it to install? What do I need to do?

    THANKS!!!!!!!!1

You can listen to music on your Palm right out of the box with RealPlayer, but many people choose Pocket Tunes. You'll need an SD card for storage as well. Sound quality has been decent, IMO, but I don't have an iPOD to compare to...

If you want an MP3 player, I would recommend you buy one. A Treo is a smart phone with a very limited MP3 player built in. It's very awkward to use compared to an iPod. I do in fact play music occasionally on my Treo, but usually I use my iPod.

    Couple comments:
    - PocketTunes works like a charm and is the way to go. Ive tried most of these apps for the Treo, trust me here. ;)
    - Get a fast, large high quality SD card. Slow cards cause choppy audio.
    - Standard iPod earbuds don't work without a 2.5mm to 3.5mm plug adapter gizmo.
-The sound quality when using these adapters is...poor; use headphones with a 2.5mm plug.
    - Sound quality is fine for me (blues and rock played loud), but after a misspent youth and advancing years, I'm probably not the one to ask...eh?
    - Using the Treo to listen while on a flight (with all wireless features disabled) causes the "flight attendents" to freak out.
    - For what I've spent on the software, SD cards, Treo sterero earphones, I could'a had an iPod Nano...

Default Let me rephrase the question...

    Thanks for the advice.

Let's say that your treo and related products could be expensed to the company....(like mine can)...

Therefore the SD card, software, and headphones ( this last one is going to be hard to get by) are more or less free to me......a new nano/ ipod is not.

    What would you do then?

The idea of having one unit appeals to me. Especially because I am one of those bad Treo owners who really doesnt use it to its full potential. I'm learing though.

Am I just being cheap here? Should I just suck it up and by an ipod or is there potential?

    Thanks again

    Default iPo....wait a sec...free????

I was going to recommend an iPod (absolutely hands down) ultil you brought up that wee bit about a free Treo.

Reasons for iPod are many: better sound (imo), VASTLY larger capacities (unless you go with the Shuffle or Nano), easier to use, a billion accessories (I know, I know, tha Treo as a lot too, but none turn a Treo into a little boom box for a picnic), and you're supporting a maverick company (always fun).

But free? Wow. Never look a gift gadget in the dock connector, I always say...

I'm self employed, my experiment was expensed...sort'a

And my company is involved in technology, with primary focus around the convergence of multiple functions in embedded devices...yes, you may call me biased.

In my opinon, the Treo is a jack of many trades, but a master of none. It's not the best cell phone I've had. Nor the best email, organizer, game station, or portable audio & video system. But it does all of these pretty well, and well enough to make dedicated replacements of questionable value to me.

That said, not being able to listen while on a plane without involving TSA is an issue for me and the only reason I bought an iPod.

So the question boils down to what you think is important. Is the differential/ marginal utility of the iPod great enough to justify the purchase and need to carry it in addtion to the Treo, which I assume is always on your hip?

While I'm a firm believer in convergence, the beauty of the iPod is it's simplicity. It does one thing..ok..now two things with video..and dare I say it does it better than any MP3 player on the market.

The Treo is many things and the expansion capabilities are endless. Movies, music, GPS...and oh yeah a phone. That being said, it's music capabilities do not match that of the iPod. Simple reason being iTunes. It's so easy to covert your CD's, buy from the iTunes store, create all kinds of playlists and then sync your iPod in seconds.

In a nutshell, both are great devices. You cannot beat the convergence and expandability of the Treo. For music, you cannot beat the iPod and iTunes.
