Caution long post
There are free programs for IMing depending on the service you use.
Chitchat lite is used for MSN only and can be found at http://kalemsoft.com/cclite.html
There is one that I know of that can be used for MSN, AOL, ICQ, and Yahoo. It is called agile messenger. I believe the palm version is still in beta. It can be found at
http://www.agilemobile.com/downloads.html
If you want Jabber or google chat support, then you will have to purchase one.
For DVD conversion I am no longer aware of any freeware programs that rip dvds. I am sure that if you do a search through google for "movies on treo", then you should come up with something.
I don't know of any freeware ringtone managers.
I also don't know of any freeware mp3 players for Treo. I believe the majority of people use ptunes insstead of Realplayer. I just stick to Realplayer, because it came free with the phone. I haven't had any problems with it.
FileZ is a freeware file manager. It is a good program to have. Currently on my phone I have (and reccomend):
Converter (converts a multitude of units)
SC-103PU (scientific calculator)
Datediff (converts amount of time between two dates)
Simple SW (stopwatch)
NVBackup (backs up treo to memory card)
Handzipper (manages zipped files)
Filez (file manager)
Uninstall (uninstaller)
Diddle bug (allows you to freely write on the screen)
Treo Alarm (alarm and weather reporter)
dir assist (Directory assistant)
a bunch of time waster type games
IM+ (all in one instant messenger..not freeware)
Snappermail (email..not freeware)
Quick News (RSS reader..not freeware)
hope this helps

You will need that to play videos on your treo. It is a good program I have used it once or twice.

First of all, for good free software, here is an article of freeware programs that I really like:

For IMing, here is another article that might come in handy

I no longer use fileZ, to manage my files since I installed zLauncher, but that is a great freeware program for moving files to/from your card, and also deleting files.
As far as a free program to rip DVD's, check out http://www.fairusewizard.com Its what I use to rip down DVD's and works GREAT!
If realplayer works for you, I would say stick with it. I am using TCPMP to watch movies, and I did use it to listen to some MP-3's. But then I moved on to PocketTunes and LOVE the app! Besides the ability to play MP-3's AND sync up with your windows media player library, it also supports Steaming Media. With PocketTunes installed, from your Treo's browser, surf over to http://mobile.treobits.com and you can install several streaming audio sites, from talk/christian/70's, 80's, 90's, etc . . . . . .
