Question for Datebk5 Users on upgrading from Tungsten E2 to Treo 650
I've asked this question in another forum, but have not received the answer I need. Here's my situation.
I'm going to purchase a Treo 650 from Alltel (my current carrier). I currently use a Tungsten E2, but just don't carry it as much as I should d/t it's size. I figure that since I always carry my phone, I would be better served to have a PDA that is also a phone so I will always have it with me. Ok... I have used PDAs for a couple years now, and upgraded to the current E2 from a Sony Clie (TJ-35 I think). Anyway, that upgrade was because the TJ had a disagreement with the ground and decided it no longer wanted to be my assistant. I currently use Mega Launcher and Datebk5 as my main 3rd party applications.... Datebk5 being the most used. There are others, but they aren't a source of concern for my current situation. In Datebk5 I have several Categories and Custom Views, as well as Hi-Rez Icons (used through 3rd party manager IconMgr). Let's just say that my transfer of information from the clie to the Tungsten did not go smoothly (huge understatement). It transferred all of my datebook entries... but that's it. None of the categories, custom views, or assigned icons transferred. I had to manually re-categorize, re-format the text (ie: bold, color, etc.), and I had to reassign icons to everything. This was a very timeconsuming endeavor that I never wish to do again. Same thing with my Contacts list, which was just the standard Palm Contacts. I had to make all new categories, and re-categorize all my entries.
Well, now that you know my life story, let's get to the main quesiton. Is it going to be possible to transfer my information from the Tungsten E2 to the Treo 650 "exactly as it is"? Can I just hotsync the Treo 650 with the same user name and have it essentially treat it as a restoration? Somebody please tell me it's possible... It has to be possible. I cannot imagine anybody willingly taking on this task every time they want to upgrade to the latest and greatest PDA. I have checked the Palm site's information on upgrading from one to the other, but it still leaves questions on whether or not my Datebk5 information and icons will seamlessly transfer. I figure there has to be several people on this forum that use Datebk5, and moved to their Treo from another Palm.
Please help. I'm so looking forward to getting the Treo, but I'm so hoping that I won't be disappointed when it comes to migrating my information.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
Now, the answer I have received so far is basically what it says on Palm's website about upgrading.... like rename backup and re-install all apps one at a time. My main concern is migrating my Datebk5 info. How do I migrate all my datebook entries so that the font formatting, categories, icons etc remain unchanged? Also, once I rename the backup file to "Old Backup" and install Datebk5 on the Treo, what do I do with "old backup" to get that info on my palm? Do I copy/paste certain folders into my new profile or what? There has to be a way to upgrade and still keep all my Datebk5 information intact. I just don't know how. Please help.
