Default Random soft resets... deleted all 3rd party apps

I just got my Treo 650 and have been having problems with random soft resets and occasional locked screen. At first I thought it might be one of my downloaded applications causing the problem so I deleted my 3rd party apps one by one without any luck. I finally resorted to a hard reset and haven't loaded any new applications, but I'm still getting the random soft resets. Any ideas? Or do I have a bum Treo?

Thanks!

What carrier do you have? You might want to try a search of the forum. There have been a lot of discussions on resets. One of them just might do the trick for you.

One of two things going on right now.

One, its a bum unit. Retun it if that is the case.
Two, you had a previous PalmOS PDA and are using the same user name and prorgrams and data from that previous one on this new one. If that is the case, then the solution is to do a hard reset, rename you Backup folder (located at c:\program file\palm\(user name)\Backup) and then sync to the old user name. Make sure that you are using teh version of Palm Desktop that came on the CD, lest you are using the latesst one on the Palm site. From that point, install your apps one HotSync at a time to find the offending app.

Also, if the second is why you are crashing, make sure that you are using the latest versions of apps as many have been updated because of the differnt memory structure for the 650 and news Palm models.

I had an old Palm OS (Tungsten T) but I completely wiped the old user ID and created a new one as I didn't want to run into any problems with my new Treo (ironic, isn't it?).

I take it that I have a bum unit then?

Not necessarily. Have you made sure that all of the programs that you are using that did not come with the Treo (items you have downlaoded) are all current versions of those programs that work with the 650? If not, then that can be an issue. You can check the programs that you have versus a list compiled at www.palmfocus.com to make sure that you have the most compatable apps for your 650.

Now, if things are still gone wrong, try a hard reset, but do not install from the backup folder everything. Rename that folder and allow for items such as your Saved and UNsaved Prefs, BT Connection Manager settings, and a few other system settings to be redone as they can sometimes get corrupted.

I had an issue a few weeks ago of an email trying to send in the background with VM that caused an issue. See if you have VersaMail or any other program trying to do something with the data network as well.

Finally, if all that fails, then yes, you have a bum unit (sorry, I test a lot before giving up on an item, so thats why I say things like this at length).

I've only had the 650 for several days now, and to avoid as many problems as possible, I did not load any 3rd party applications from my old Tungsten. I performed the zero out reset (apparently the mother of all resets that required two hands and a stylus in my mouth) and the phone still freezes/crashes/resets randomly without any 3rd party applications installed. I'm going to call Cingular on Monday and see what they say.

If I need to exchange phones, will they let me keep my current Treo until I get the new one so I don't have to go without a phone?

I'm going to try one more thing since I've gone this far. I'm just going to go ahead and erase my entire user file, perform the zero out reset, create a new user profile and see if this solves any of the problems.

If you have been doing a hard reset and then syncing the old info from your backup folder, then all you have been doing is going in a circle. Just do the hard reset but RENAME the backup folder and sync. You will end up with a fresh device after the sync that way.

I have been erasing the backup folder entirely so that absolutely nothing from previous HotSyncs gets installed, flashing the ROM to purge it back to "factory state" but still getting the crashes. This unit definitely is defective. I'll call Cingular on Monday. Thanks for all the advice though...

Did you get your Treo at a local store? If so and your within 30 days of purchase take it back and exchange it there!

If you call Cingular Support and they use the Express Exchange, your likely to get a refurbished unit.

This is a gamble. I've heard of those who recieved a refurbished unit with only a couple hundred minutes on it. However, the unit I recieved had over 11,000 minutes on it.

I was having similar problems and when I saw the high minutes, I was extremely motivated to find the software conflict (Xpressmail) and fixed it. The Express Exchange is great if your phone dies after the 30 day period but it has its risks.

Curious, what programs are you running? Also, when your device resets, what does the reset log indicate caused the reset? hit #*377 then dial to find this out. It will show you what caused the last reset and give you an idea where to look.
