Default ? re bluetooth as modem, and sending pics

OK, I finally got my 650 last weekend. It's my 4th PALM so that part's familiar. I like the 650 MUCH better than I like its documentation! The documentation leaves a lot of information to be desired! I figured out how to get my gmail on versamail. I figured out how to attach attachments in versamail. I got a bluetooth USB adapter and figured out how to hotsync with it. I have not figured out how to send photos to the computer via bluetooth. And in spite of following all the instructions, I have not managed to set it up to use as a modem for the laptop. If anyone has successfully done these things, I'd love to know how. I have my phone and data plans through Ntelos.

(I did also post this in introductions. I won't be double-posting in the future - I want to see what the forum puts up instead of the "you haven't posted, post an introduction" message.

    Hi Jane:

When you mention you followed all the instructions, which do you mean? I have not done this, but people seem to be having success with PdaNet, which can be found here:

I downloaded it months ago, but I still haven't found the time...

    Good luck,

I use PdaNet some. I don't want to say its everyday, but I use it on occasion. Its really neat to be able to access the net with my laptop with the treo. Speeds are decent and once connected, even with a poor cell signal, it seems solid! About the only problems I have had with it are with sending mail through outlook (sometimes it works and sometimes I get weird smtp errors) but as long as I send mail directly through my email server from a web page, no problems what so ever. The only other problem I have had is with Chatter. If I don't shut down Chatter before I launch PdaNet, I get some sort of bluetooth error (I am not using bluetooth) But as soon as I see it, I know its because I forgot to turn off my email. Junefabrics has an excellent FAQ for any kind of error messages. It might be good to use PdaNet at a location where you have other net access a few times to make sure you don't have any problems. Launching it and getting errors won't help you to access the faq page so that you can fix it. http://junefabrics.com/palmnet/faq.php
I speak from experience! I had installed it, but hadn't used it. First time I didn't have access, I went to launch it and got that bluetooth error . . . It never occured to me to turn off my email program before launching it . .. That was all I had to do to get it to work!

The instructions I referred to were in the Treo manual. I have data plan through Ntelos and should not need PDAnet or any other 3rd party software according to what I read - but I'm missing a step somewhere.

If you figure out how to use your Treo as a modem without an application like PdaNet, please share it here. I am not familiar with your Carrier and they might offer something to allow you to do this, but I am sure you are going to need some sort of application (beyond bluetooth) that tells both your laptop and your treo to send and receive data through one another through the wireless connection. PdaNet is the only Treo application I am aware of that currently does that.

Will do. I haven't had time to really mess with it and won't 'til maybe next weekend - I travel for work and for weekend fun and that's the first time I'll have any spare hours next to a desktop to do research on a full screen. Although, I am hoping Ntelos will be able to tell me when I call them during "normal business hours". We shall see.

    Default Success! I have modem.

For anyone who may also have these problems - I now can do the laptop/modem/Treo thing. I called Ntelos and got my username and password from them. I also needed the number to dial, and to put that into the screen on the computer. The number given in my documentation was wrong. I downloaded another Treo 650 manual from the internet, which gave more complete instructions but gave a dial number which was even more wrong. Once I figured all that out, I could use my Treo as modem with my friend's computer - but still not mine. Turned out either my adapter was incompatible or defective. I returned it and got the same kind my friend had and it worked fine.
I did not need any extra software, just a properly working bluetooth adapter AND information which was not correctly in the manuals.

OK, so you are basically using your Treo to dial your Internet Service Provider, with bluetooth sync to your laptop!!!! Long ago, I used to do something similar with a Handspring! To access the internet with my phone modem add on, I would dial my local internet service provider's number, log in with username and password and surf (@9600 baud rate) from my handheld! Glad you got it figured out! Sorry for all the headache to get you there! Manuals aren't worth much when they aren't right are they??
