I am sure they can, but most of the time, the problem with cards is that data on them becomes corrupt. When this happens, you will need to re-format the card and you could lose some critical data . . .

How I address is, is that every so often, I copy the contents of my card to a folder on my laptop.

But most of the things such as docstogo, contacts, ebooks, etc are all backed up upon hotsync . .

Unless it's an application with a special conduit, SD card files are not backed up during a hot sync. In general, though, flash memory is pretty stable. Folks have been using USB flash "drives" for a while with few problems. I've been using memory cards for years without a single glitch. Just be sure it's a known branded card bought from a reputable seller (beware of auctions). If you want to be super cautious - and who can be criticized for that? - you can do as Stillrockin does and periodically mount the card on your computer and make a copy.

I use BackupBuddyVFS to perform nightly backups to my SD card, and BackupBuddy Pro to backup my Treo and SD card to my desktop at hotsync. When it comes to backups, there's no such thing as too much redundancy...
