Unless it's an application with a special conduit, SD card files are
not backed up during a hot sync. In general, though, flash memory is pretty stable. Folks have been using USB flash "drives" for a while with few problems. I've been using memory cards for years without a single glitch. Just be sure it's a known branded card bought from a reputable seller (beware of auctions). If you want to be super cautious - and who can be criticized for that? - you can do as Stillrockin does and periodically mount the card on your computer and make a copy.
