Default Serial Hotsync Cable for Treo 650

    All:

I have some old Palm software that requires a serial hotsync cable. It is for diagnosing the check engine light on my vehicle. It is great software, however it requires a serial hot sync cable not only to talk to the car, but to hotsync and install the software.

Does anyone know of a serial hotsync cable for our devices and can you provide me with information or a link? Thanks in advance.

Googled "treo 650" + "serial hotsync" and found this and this (second item on catalog page).

Thank you Jeff. It appears the Karbon one is Out of Stock and the PN one is $65. Gonna have to think a little harder about this. Thanks.

Yeah, I saw the price on that PN cable, pretty steep. Any chance the developer of your diagnostic software has a newer version that supports USB?

I wish. I asked and they said no. I am going to try my USB sync cable with some gender changers and a USB-->RS232 adapter. We'll see tonight. Thank for the help.

Alright. Before I drop the coin on a $65 hotsync cable, I would like to exhaust my options and I want to make sure the errors I am getting are not caused by the user. In other words I want to make sure the setup I am trying now is absolutely not going to work before I move to purchasing an expensive cable. I am trying some adapters and gender changers to convert my USB sync cable to 9-pin Serial.

So far it has not been working for me, but I am not sure of the settings. I have it on Local now and pointed to the Comm port. I am getting the following error message.

The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The problem I see, Larry, is that your diagnostic software will be looking for a comm port. I'm not aware of any software to route USB traffic to a virtual comm port, like you can do with Bluetooth.

Just an update. After more extensive searching, I found this. I ordered it this morning and will report back on whether it works. $25 cheaper than the PN Tech cable, so that was nice.
