Default Specifying contact categories in Outlook

As I mentioned last week, I am trying to find a way to sync my Treo with both my work and home PC's without mixing all the information together. I see that in Contacts there is a categories field which has Personal and Business by default. Is there a field in my Outlook contacts that tie to that field in the Treo? If so, the solution might be to have my work contact identified as Business and my home identified as Personal.

Has anyone else come up with a solution to this problem?

Thanks

One handheld device, two Macs or PCs (or a combination thereof)
Many people like to keep two computers (such as home and work) in synch with their device. The key to making this work is that one of the desktop computers will merely hold a copy of the data on your device. If you attempt to do a two-way synchronization with both computers, your data can become confused.
  • On the computer that provides true synchronization (often your work computer): Change the conduit settings for the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes to Synchronize the files. This ensures that any changes you make in Outlook or Palm Desktop will be reflected on your device.
  • On the computer that will hold a copy of the data (often your home computer): Change the conduit settings for the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes to Handheld overwrites Desktop, and check the box for Set as default. This lets you keep a copy of your data on the second computer, but won't get confused if you try to synchronize with multiple PCs or Macs.
This arrangement lets you have your personal data copied to the second computer and also lets you install software from the second computer. Make data changes on the device when using the second computer; the data only travels to, not from it. Finally, use the most recent version of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager in both locations (you can even sync with a Macintosh at work, and Windows at home).

In Outlook 2003 (only version I have handy), there is a Categories button on the bottom right of the General tab for a contact.

Yeah, I've specified a category for some of my contacts but when those contact go to the Palm desktop and then the Treo, the category information is lost.

Thanks for the help. Any other ideas?

Are you using Palm Desktop on one PC and Outlook on the other?

No, Outlook on both PCs. In Outlook I created a contact with a category called Business, saved it as a vCard, imported it into Palm Desktop to see if the category data would match up with the categories in the Palm Desktop and Treo. The data showing that the contact was a Business contact in Outlook did not make it to the Palm Desktop nor Treo.

Default Pocketmirror!

I use Chapura Pocketmirror Pro XT to accomplish what you are describing. My wife and I each have a Treo 650. All total we have three calendars and three PCs and I use pocketmirror to keep all in sync. From time to time there are some duplicates, the normal stuff you'd see even syncing one device on one pc though. Hope that helps.
