| Store mp3 ringtones on the treo and not SD? Hey everyone,
Trying to add a new MP3 ringtone to my Treo 650, it's only 128kb large. If I use bluetooth to transfer, it says error no SD card found or whatever cannot store to internal memory. Is there any way to do this? I don't want to have to keep my SD card in there all the time just for a ringtone... I used bluefiles to browse the treo but couldn't find any other ringtones in there. Thanks! |

| The MP3 ringtone thing is dependent on the application you are using. There are several good programs, including RingCare, CallBlock and LightWav. Ringo is another application in the category; however, a "number" of people have issues with it. The Treo does not support MP3 ringtones in memory. On your 650 you do NOT have enough room to run MP3 ring tones in memory and frankly, the regular add-on ring tone take up a tremendous amount of room. You add just a few "custom" ring tones and you quickly find yourself out of space.
The answer: a decent sized SD card and a ring-tone management application (see he above listed).

| Do you use the Palm Desktop for Hotsync? Just open up Quick Install and drag the .mp3 file from your computer into the area that says Internal (it may say something else, I'm not at home right now) the bottom area is the for the SD Storage Card. Then when you do a Hotsync it will install the .mp3 file into your Ringer Sounds folder so you can access it in Sounds

| Good luck with the above. #1, there are no folders in main memory. #2, to test my above statement that MP3's are not supported in main memory, I copied one from my SD card to main memory - the file did not show up.
If you want to add the MP3 as a ring tone, it must be converted to the required format and then copied to the device. In order to do that, there are a couple of applications free applications that convert the file.

Except for it storing the ringtones in main memory. But I only have a few stored and they are under 500kb; like you said - shoot for 30 seconds long.

Ben | Thanks for clarifying this, I used the minitone app and I just thought it converted it to a smaller .mp3 file to use as a ringtone, which it puts into the main memory and it does show up in your Sounds folder. But now it sounds from what you said that it converts it to another file format?

| It is no longer an MP3 - it is a WAV file and it is added to your ring tone index. The problem as I stated above, one or two is not big, but when you start adding a bunch of them, it will substantially affect your memory availability, which on the 650 becomes a critical issue very quickly. As for the showing up in your sounds folder thing, I understand what you are saying, though again, folders are not created in main memory.
Anyway, due to memory constraints the 650 faces, you really are much better off with a card based ring tone management application - you can do so much more with them. My 650 runs CallBlock and my 700p runs Ring Care and I have it set to announce the caller's name for almost every entry in my address book. What it does for me is that when it announces, I know by name and do not have to remember what song goes with what face. In addition, because it is card based, I am basically unlimited to the number of MP3s it is capable of handling.

Ben | Thanks Ben, you explained that very clearly for me. At this time I am very satisfied with the two ringtones I made with minitone. I only attach them to my husband's cell# and our home#. I'm not that popular that I get a ton of calls on my cell phone. But if I do find the need in the future, I'll check out that RingCare, is that the one that incorporates VolumeCare if you have it installed? Nice apps.

| RingCare does NOT incorporate all of the features of VolumeCare. It incorporates the SD card monitoring function only. VolumeCare handles the volume issue(s) and card monitoring function. I have both installed on my Treos. As a note, on the 700P, I have disabled the card monitoring function of VolumeCare and with RingCare monitoring it, the resource usage is a bit lower.
