stylus problems

I recently purchased a used treo 650 everything works fine on it except the stylus. I cant seem to get it to sync up with the screen no matter how many times i touch the center of the target. does anyone have any quick fixes for this.

There is no fix for this other than replacing the digitizer. The problem you are experiencing is probably why the previous owner sold the device.

Ditto to what Ben said and return the device if at all possible. If you are unable to do this and paid via check or a third party such as PayPal/credit card, simply place a "stop pay" on the check or file a dispute with the third party.

second question! does anyone know what the blinking star in the upper left hand corner is for?

The blinking star is the "attention manager" getting your attention, which is fulfilling its job description. To get the attention of the "attention manager," you can either tap the blinking star or in most situations depress and hold the middle button of the 5-way button assembly.
