Default Sync problems with Versamail and Gmail

I know there's a large thread on Gmail (and I've read every post in it) but I didn't see this question answered.

When I delete an email from versamail it doesn't delete it from my gmail account.
I think I have all of the settings set correctly:

preferences-server has the "delete mail on server..." option selected

I also tell versamail to delete the copy on the server whenever I empty the trash can, but it doesn't delete it from the server.

I can send and receive emails from versamail with no other problems so I know those settings are correct. But when it tries to delete the server copy of an email the status bar never changes from 0%. I would expect at least a quick jump to 100% but it doesn't show even that--and versamail does not give any errors.

Here's all my settings:
Account Name: Gmail
Mail Service: Other
Protocol: POP
username: ?@gmail.com
Password: assigned
Email address: ?@gmail.com
Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
Incoming port: 995 (ssl selected)
Outgoing port: 587(ssl and esmtp selected)

So, any ideas?

As it turns out, when versamail connects to gmail and attempts to delete any messages (to sync up) gmail ignores the request. You can however set up gmail to delete messages from the server whenever your device retrieves your messages (this is in the gmail pop settings).

There are a couple of problems with this setup:

1. If you check your email from more than 1 computer (or a Treo and a computer...) you can only pull the mail down one time.

2. You have to set your email size limits on your Treo significantly higher so that you receive attachments, etc.

My original intent was to keep the messages on the server so I wouldn't have to download the entire message/attachments automatically. So much for that idea.
