System Tools or Repair Synchronisation crashing new 650

Hi there, I just bought a 650 - upgrading from my 600. I installed the software which all went fine. Then I went to synchronize and the synchronisation stalled and the treo just went crazy...turning on and off, on and off. Nothing I could do to stop it. I figured the device was faulty so returned it to the store (it is an unlocked version but I have an account with AT&T I bought form J&R). They gave me a new one and thinking that it may have been a problem with the upgrade of software, I uninstalled the software and tried to reinstall from scratch. Exactly the same thing happened. did a hard reset and phone turned back on again. I tried to synch again and the same thing happened again. I returned it to store. Store says nothing wrong with phone, something wrong with synch. etc. I tend to agree. However they did give me a new one. So - now I have my lovely new 650. It works fine but am terrified to synch it and to bring all my apps and synch with email etc. Please help....I'm desparate. Thank you all in advance.

What options did you pick when you installed the Palm desktop/Hotsync software? Is it syncing with Outlook? There is a log for the hotsync, if you click the hotsync icon in the system tray, you should be able to select "View Log". It might be able to give you a better idea of what's causing your problem.

The problem is in your backup folder. When you hotsync, it is 'dumping' all the files and programs from your Treo 600 onto your new Treo. Go to My computer-> Program Files-> PalmOne-> 'Deborah'->Backup.
Rename the folder backup to today's date. Now Sync your Treo and only your Outlook data will come onto your Treo 650. You can then add each program 1 by 1 to make sure it is compatible.

    Default thanks so much

the back up folder doesn't seem to have a date....do you think I should just delete everything in it instead?

You don't have to delete it, unless you really don't want it. I would assume that since you sync with Outlook, all the important PIM information you have is in there. The other things in the backup directory are the programs and associated data, so my guess is that you wouldn't want to lose that. It's good enough to just rename it, in case you find that you are missing something when you go to install any software that you had on your 600 to your 650.

    Default Before I do this.....

Do you think that the programs I had for the 600 - will still work for the 650 or do you think they could cause problems also?

Do you think I should uninstall the palm software and reinstall it with the new disk so that I can register the new serial no etc? Or do you think that this would not be the problem?

    Default archive file

I just noticed that my archive file has a heap of data in it. Should I change/delete things from there also or does that no affect the synch?

Leave the archive folder. In fact, it would be a good idea if you took everything out of the backup folder and put it in the archive folder. The archive folder does not impact your hotsync

Uninstall the palm software and start anew.

You will have to try each program from your 600 one at a time to see if they will work on your new 650.
