| Temp files Hello all,
Has anyone had experience with Temporary files?
I had an issue yesterday (while traveling of coarse) where I was unable to open certain apps with an error message stating I was out of memory. I have half of my phone's memory free and use my SD Card for everthing that will move to it. Using FileZ I found a file with the extention .TMP that was 8MB. (yes MB) I deleted it and it works fine. I also found 13 additional files with the extention .tmp and several database files that state TEMP somewhere in the name.
I am not sure what I can delete and what I should not. I can't say I am having any additional problems, just looking for the knowledge. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Target

| Reading your post, I did wonder about 3rd party apps and their settings. For example, when I first installed Quicknews, I noticed that my memory would quickly disappear after it updated. I realized that even though I stored quicknews on the card, it was storing its updates on the Treo and found a setting to store on the card as well, and was even able to limit the cache size. I think that Docs to Go can also create some temp files. And of course, any attachments/downloads out of versamail might use up the memory. I believe that anything less than 5 mb's available asks for trouble. Anytime you launch an app, you are using the available memory to run that particular app. Some apps (email apps) can quickly consume whats available. Before I got zlauncher I successfully ran at around 3megs for a few weeks however . . Just looked and right now I have 7.8 available.

| Hi Rockin,
Thanks for the reply.
I seem to think there is something brewing in my Treo. I recently had what I consider two major crashes. The first was with Docs To Go V8.03. I use it relentlessly. I noticed that first my categories went away and my docs started syncing to the "My Documents" folder. Where before I had about seven categories and my docs synced to several different folders. A real mess on the PC.
The second major crash happend with versamail. I use it with two accounts and was sending an email last week and it crashed the Treo and I lost everything in mail. Versamail went back to the new state asking me to add my account info. Since last week, it has happened three times.
All this and start finding 8MB tmp files. I do download large attachments but rarely keep them longer than 24-hours on the Treo.
I have about 9MB free currently on the Treo. I suppose what I am looking for is to see if anyone has had a similar problem and what or which app is causing these large temp files and how they correcxted it. As I am sure you do, I live by this device.
Thanks,
Target

| Target, I am at work, and can't respond like I would like to . . . Do a search here for Versamail and crashes. You should find a link to Palm's website. There is an article there, there might solve your Versamail crashes. I know I had this problem and others here have also . . .
I feel like a salesman for Chatteremail, but that solved my problems with Versamail crashes, and is a whole lot better at handling mail than versamail is . .

| Hey Target, try this link to see if this isn't your versamail issues

| Rockin,
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately I have done that twice already. I think I am ready for your chatter mail for my mail issues. I like versamail and use Glimmer mail for my MSN account. But I think there is another issue, a big issue, but I can't put my finger on it. My Treo has become very unstable. Today's fatal error crashes included such apps as Versamail again (lost everything) TCPMP while after pausing a video, and my palm Bible. I think the large file I deleted was the data file for the Bible. It won't open now. Some how it moved from my card to the Treo's internal memory.
Maybe my issues are with the card. Everything that has crashed except for Versamail had been on the card. Has anyone heard of a card going defective?
Thanks,
Target

| When I first got my 650, I too liked Versamail. After using it about 2 weeks, it starting crashing. I would wipe out the offending database and rebuild it, only to find it happening again 2-3 days later. Thats why I moved on to chatter.
I would tend to think that the large file was your bible database. I know on some of the ones I have used, you have the option of downloading individual books, or say the old testamant and the new testamant. I am betting you deleted one of those testamants
TCPMP? I really don't recall any problems I have had with it since I have installed it.
Cards going bad? Just had a 2 gigger go bad a few weeks ago. It was only about 5 months old. But my symptoms don't sound anything like yours. My Treo nor my PC would recognize the card . . .

| Today I got a Emul68K error when the phone app crashed. Palm states this about Emul68K errors:
Solution ID: 36444
'Emul68K' errors (including 'Main.C,line:X,illegal instruction X at address X' and 'Emul68K common.c, Line:X index out of range')
If you see an error on your handheld that begins with Emul68K, you can be fairly sure that it is caused by an older application that is incompatible with newer handhelds. What is "Emul68K"?
Older Palm OS applications were written for the Motorola 68K series of chips, which were present on older handhelds. Recent handhelds, however, use a new generation chip which runs older applications in an emulation mode. Normally this process happens transparently to the user, and you'll never know it's happening unless it stumbles and causes an error.
I don't think that I have an old app on the Treo. Their recommendation is to do a hard reset and add apps one at a time until the problem comes back and delete that app. However, with the fatal errors happening on different apps include the Phone, I don't think that is my problem. I have deleted everything that has crashed and re-installed the apps I can't live without.
Let me take this opportunity to thank Stillrockin for all the replys. I enjoy reading your posts and appreciate your insight.
Thanks,
Target

| Hi Target:
I can't add a lot, but I do recall that sometimes the flag telling you that a certain application caused a reset can be deceiving because of programs that run in the background and may be tied in to other programs. In other words, just because the flag states the reset was caused by Phone, doesn't necessarily mean it was the Phone app.
You should probably follow the advice to see when the system resets and delete that app.
Good luck,
Stevetaz
