Smile Thoughts on Cnet reviews on the 650

I was just wondering I just purchased a new 650 have not updated it yet but was wondering what people felt in this forum about the 650. All treos seem to have something wrong with them from minor to major. It can be software related, user related etc.

I was just wondering since I read reviews of the 650 on Cnet and they were killing the 650. Sure the reviews are some older and a few newer ones. But I was wondering if the 650 is not what I should be buying. Should I buy the 700p. I don't like windows so the w is out of the question. Is the 700p so much better or am I just wasting my money paying another $250.00 to get the 700p no contract price. i bought a 650 brand new for $225.

Let me know what all you 650 users think about this.

    Thanks for any helpful thoughts

Any problem I have had with my 650 has been corrected with a 3rd party app. Yes, I have spent quite a bit on my 650 beyond its original price, but the bottom line is, over a period of several months, I have turned it into a very useful and productive accessory that goes everywhere I do. That said, the 700P is better in many respects than my 650. Is it perfect also? Read the 700P forum here and decide for yourself, but I think you will find it is not.

To me this is a no brainer. Why buy old tech.... I bet you will be hard pressed to find a 650 from a carrier, e-bay will have a bunch of them though.

LOok at the features the 700 gives you over the 650., if they are important you have your answer.

I read a lot of stories about the 650 right after I purchased it and started to get a case of buyers' remorse. I have had it now for about 6 months, and have never had some of the problems that you hear about: needing to hard reset, not being able to open apps, etc. The most complex problem I have had was Documents2Go resetting on me. I downloaded a free app from DataViz and haven't had any problems since. Advice I would give is to keep your Treo a Treo. Most problems come when people start messing with Java Apps and tinkering with the ROM. That's where it seems that the problems come from. Despite what some say, Palm has put out a really good product that is very good the way it was made.

    Hey,

While it does seem there are complaints out there, I'm a believer in my 650. I attribute it to the fact more people are apt to complain than praise in this life of ours!

I should mention I've had two 650's since January '06, because I returned the first in July due to a well-known manufacturers glitch. This would be a reason to never buy a used 650 considering the product was initially flawed.

My uses are mainly phone/data-based being in a sales field, so I can't comment on the web aspects of the Treo. Frankly, I don't quite get the attraction/need for hand-held internet. I can access my laptop enough in a given day to keep up with email or surf the web.

So, I strongly recommend the 650. Also- check out the Altec Lansing InMotion speaker system ($150) which provides surprising sound for your music. Good Luck & Enjoy!

I will say that I love my Treo 650, but I'm glad that I upgraded to the 700p. Unlike Jefe (above), my work gave me a piece-of-junk laptop that I'd rather NOT carry around with me. :laugh3: So, I'm finding the "broadband-like" internet access of the 700p to be pleasing (although, it's not cable modem!).

I've only had the 700p for a couple days, yet. So, I wouldn't dare write a review. I love being able to stream music via internet while walking the dog, though. The extra internal memory is going to be useful as I load more apps. The sound levels on the 650 seriously needed the help of the VolumeCare Pro software. But, on the 700p, I don't really see a need for it.

The 700p is an improvement. Maybe not revolutionary, but it's improved over the 650.

(That said...I have no reservations about giving my 650 to my brother. I know it'll prove to be as useful a tool for him as it was for me.)

If the 680 is available, I would consider going with it over the 650. The 700p is definitately worth it. The 650 is "old" technology that for a new user would be a purchase I would not consider. Ben

I have had my Treo 650 for almost 2 years. Although I do find some bugs with it (wish the blazer was faster, and the sound quality) but just like others have mentioned most of the problems were adressed with 3rd party applications.
I have looked to upgrading it, but since I am on Cingular my only option right now is the 680. and reading the reviews I do not think its going to be a big improvment over the 650. Therefore I am still waiting for the 750, which appears will take care of the current 650 shortcomings.

Default New Treo old Palm User

I have only been using my Treo 650 for a month but I have been a long time palm user. Liveing in Canada we seem to be a year behind in getting the latest and greatest, but that's OK as by the time we get it the bugs are mostly worked out. The palm side of the Treo has worked as well as my M130 or my Zire Z71. I was not happy that there was not a seamless transfer of data as there had been in the past from one palm to another but I made the transition. There is a learning curve for sure. It took me about 2 weeks to get to the point where I started to like it. I am now at the point where I almost like it as much as my Z71. Make sure you do-not sync an old palm setting to the new Treo. I did that and it was 6 hours of hell trying to fix it. I agree with the user above on the documents to go. It worked great and then it would do a soft reset every time I tried to open a document their fix worked for me also. The phone side I was concerned about but I wanted to only carry one device so this I felt was and is the way to go. Telus does not have the 700P in Canada and just released the 700w this month (mid November). My carrier Telus will not allow any 3RD party phones to be used on their system so I Had to purchase a Treo that was designed for/by them. I can say that I have not had any of the problems like low volume on playing music through the speaker or problems with people not being able to hear me because of the mic like others have had, could be because they fixed them. The reverse dun works great at home and the office and the internet connection is fast this way. The battery life is short compared to my old LG6190 phone and Zire Z71 but it is not fair to compare these 2 to a Treo as I use the Treo more than I used just one of them. After about 12 hours of use I have used 50% of the battery with bluetooth and phone turned on. If someone is getting a Treo 650 get a new one they seem to have most of the bugs removed from them.

A very happy user so far.
