The Sprint Treo is CDMA, so would that be compatible with a carrier that's located in the place you're planning to go? I know people have used a Sprint Treo 650 with Verizon, so it should be possible to unlock it, but I don't what the procedure should be.

Where abroad are you talking? If you're talking Europe, they run GSM everywhere. I spent 7 years living in Italy. I traveled alot to Germany, so I just broke down and got a D1 Sim card for my phone. It worked out to be much cheaper (at least a few years ago, before prices became competitive) than roaming with the Italian card. If you get a Sprint phone (like I have), you won't be able to swap cards, as there aren't any.

Default reason for unlocking

Hi guys and thanks for the replies. I am not sure where i will be travelling but it would be UK and India. We have CDMA in India, i dont know about the EU. The thing is i wanted a universal solution. I am aware that GSM is everywhere but i have a GSM T-mobile and i pay 39.99 for 1000 mins, when i asked them for a data plan they want 49.99 AND will take my mins down to only 300. At the same time i have a Sprint (which is only 3 days old) and hence though i could get a CDMA.

So the question still remains is CDMA Treo 650 a good investment!

Cheers,

Ashwin

Hey guys... I was reading up on your conversation regarding the Treo 650 from Sprint and the difference between the GSM & the CDMA versions? I think I understood that the GSM phone with a simms card can be used with other simms cards and has capabilities to be used with other phone networks because it's unlocked...is that right? If I got that correctly then the other question would be can the CDMA phone be used on another network also? I have a Treo 650 I would like to pass on to my son who travels to South America on business and he would like to use my Treo 650 phone? Is there a way to unlock the Treo 650 CDMA phone from Sprint since I don't have that account anymore and my phone is just sitting in a drawer now?
Thanks in advance for any information regarding my question.

I know that Sprint and verizon will not let you swap between each other but some independant phone companies will allow you to use them..(pretty sure) Your first call is to the provider in South America to see if the sprint phone can or will be allowed by them on their system. Also verify that data will work too.
