Default Treo 650 (Cingular) goes to sleep too quickly, and when 'end call' is pressed...

Just set up a Cingular Treo 650 for a client - the first time i've dealt with this phone. There seems to be a problem whereby the phone ignores the 'go to sleep after 3 minutes' setting, and just goes to sleep seemingly at random, often a couple seconds after the last button press or other input. In addition, the 'end call' button ALWAYS puts the phone to sleep, with keyguard on and the screen black, even when that button is used to end a call.

Is this a known issue, and are there any fixes, or is the hardware borked?

Thanks,

r

Hi Robothebobo:

I can't answer the questions regarding why the phone shuts off after only seconds. I am curious about what you mean when you say after pressing the "End Call" button the screen goes black. Which button are you referring to?

If you are referring to the red telephone icon button on the right side of the Treo, next to the email icon button, that is not an end call button.

It will end any call you are on, but that is the button to put the Treo to sleep and to wake it up. If you are working on something and take a break causing the screen to go black, using that button to press once should return you to the task you were working on instead of having to restart an application. It is also the button to press and hold to turn the telephone on and off.

I hope this helps a bit,
SteveTaz

Thanks, but now i'm really confused.

If that button isn't the 'end call' button, then what is the 'end call' button? The red telephone icon is pretty standard as an 'end call' button on other cellphones...

What is the proper way to end a call without also shutting off the phone?

Here's a pic to make sure we're talking about the same thing... It's the button on the far right with the red telephone and power on/off icons:

I think what he meant to say, is that it is not JUST a button to end a call. In addition to ending the call, it will wake up and put to sleep the PDA itself. I just noticed that I have my screen set to go to sleep after 3 minutes, but it usually goes to sleep after about 30 secs . . . .

I can end a call with the red phone button and my screen stays on for a few seconds, giving me the option to place another call. If I press the end call (red button) again it turns off the lights and I have to hit the call button and the center button to unlock my treo.

Sorry if I confused. Here is what the Treo manual states:
Ending a Call
Do one of the following to end a call:
Press Power/End .

Select Hang Up.

Press the headset button (if the headset is attached).

Tip:
When a call lasts longer than one minute, the screen turns off. Press any
key except
Power/End to wake up the screen, and then press Power/End

to hang up the call. Be careful not to press
Power/End to wake up the
screen as this will accidentally end the call.

Stillrockin is correct. What I should have said is that it isn't just an end call button.

My screen also seems to shut off quicker than I would expect, but it always has.

Hello r,

Hard to say why it's not remembering to sleep at 3 minutes. Cingular's last software update (1.17) addressed a similar issue: 'Auto-off' feature reverts to 30 seconds after changing to a different setting on a Cingular Treo 650 smartphone. You can follow through the links in that article to see if it has that update.

Sincerely
Kevin
