I can't believe they would make a Treo that wasn't compatible with older devices? Then again, maybe it has something to do with the transition for Handspring to PalmOne. Or, just maybe they were looking to rake in more accessory sales? Imagine that? If the new Treo 650 were dramatically different in size and specs, then I could see it...but I don't see that much of difference. Looks awesome, but it's not that different from my 600?
Well I think maybe one reason is the contacts on treo 600 on the bottom for syncing and car kits are internal... most standard device have flat contacts easier to design car kits, to place device into without have to "plug" ...I agree change is costly but in the last 10- or 12 devices I have had over the last 10 years Motorola 4 models brick, 2microtac microtac-elite (one carKit fit all but the brick), Nokia 5models one flip one slide one soap bar 1tri-modes (car kit fit all), Mitsubishi, audiovox two, Samsung three, uniden one, pcc, others I want to forget all even within lines from same manufacture do the "this won't fit" "click our accessories" link"... EBay buyer would be happy to pick up a used device with acc. ...yea I've got a drawer full of $25.00 cables for now defunct devices... Motorola alone I had two car kits installed in two cars, wall charger, travel charger kit, four extra batteries CLA for rental cars all of which are worthless now. If I factored the total cost of devices and accessories in the evauluation of cost per minute I would cry. BUT I had connectivity...right!!!!!
Nokia had a program within a time period all devices had same contacts.... good for installed car kits ...reason to buy the next Nokia device... they changed that policy as well a few years ago.
I think the audio connector the 600 uses should be changed what a non-standard connector...
where is the external antenna to Buy for the 600 or 650????
Carriers love the acc change they make 250% margin on them... they laugh all the way to the bank. Years ago a CLA cost the carrier 2.00 and sold to me for 59.95 they gave me a 25 credit on the next months bill when I signed another 1 year agreement...
Till standardization plays a bigger role here we are.
