Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. Cingular and Unlocked use GSM Networks. For all intensive purposes, the Treo 650 is the same. Different features may be available based upon carrier. For example, Sprint just released a GSM update that allows for DUN (Dial Up Networking) w/ Bluetooth.

The new GSM updater also enables DUN....

A major difference it the sim cards in GSM and lack there of in CDMA...

I would go for a GSM if you travel alot around the world.....and get an unlocked Treo 650.

That way when away from your carrier network you can buy prepaid sims from other carries to use your phone over seas or wherever...

A little research will turn up alot of info.....

well the unlocked is more expensive because if you buy the cheap one it is most likely a 2 yr. contract..at 50 or 60 bucks a month at least for two years.....thats
twice the cost of the phone....so they can offer it for free if they wanted to.....unlocked phones usually are thought to be for people with carriers already and want another or different phone...they have to get the ful price of the phone.

Can you buy a low $$$ cingular and unlock it?
You can then use it world wide with any prepaid cards, etc., right?

Yes and if you are persuasive you can get it unlocked for free...

What I have heard works is to talk to a cingular rep and ask about world travel.
They will go through the banter about how its a GSM phone which basically means the phone will work worldwide but you will roam and what not and might experience outages...then say well what about unlocking it so I can use prepaid SIM cards when i am overseas....they will be hesitant. You might have to try a few different reps..then ask to speak to a tech and tell him they said he could give you an unlock code so you can use it overseas....

I haven't done it yet but have known it to work a couple times before..or else you can pay to have it unocked...costs a few buck...around 50 dollars or so.

But yes you can unlock a cingular locked phone....

I've heard the same thing. Calling and asking might work. If you're lucky, I believe they get back to you in a day or so with an unlock code.
