from reading this thread and others dealing with verizon updates a few questions. Are you using a desktop or laptop? Are you using the data cable for your treo or some other palm device? Apparently the 650 is finicky about the voltage levels and if its not just right it wont install. Tryt the zero out and if you can get it working from that procedure then do a frash download and follow kabeyun's process just above and see what happens. Keep us posted on your situation Besh wishes good luck!

Hi there, and thanks for the reply. I had my arm poised and ready to fling this Treo through the window when I saw the e-mail notification come in.

I'm working from my desktop only, and am using the original cables/connectors that came with my Treo. I'm off to try the zero-out and your other suggestions and will keep you posted.
    Thanks.

I agree, Sue. It sounds like your only potential passage out of hell is to try a zero-out reset. In fact, with nothing to lose you may have already done it by now. How'd it go?

    Default Still Stuck

Tried the zero-out reset, got me nowhere. Called Verizon Tech Support, brought the technician up to date on what my problem was and what I'd already tried, and he asked me to do a few of the steps again, with him talking me through, basically as a technicality so that he could verify that we'd tried all the options. We did that and the phone still wouldn't turn on. He was then ready to issue me a replacement unit. I asked if he could send the authorization to a local Verizon store so I could go pick it up (don't fancy the idea of being without it for 3 days) but he said that was impossible.... he could only issue a replacement through his channels. I asked if I could throw in some money and have him send me a 700W instead.... he said he was only allowed to issue me the same phone that I orignally purchased. I asked if he could put a credit on my account rather than sending a replacement and he said he had to send me an item with the identical retail value of the item I originally purchased. I backed off but asked him what the retail value of the 650 is. He looked it up and said $399 with a two-year contract. I then asked him what the retail value of a 700W was. He looked it up and came back with $399 with a two-year contract. He seemed embarrassed and asked if I'd like to be transferred to customer service so I asked if they would be able to accommodate me differently than he could. He said "no", they'll tell you the same thing, so I passed on the alternate rep. I then said that I would wait for the new phone, then take it to the store and replace it, probably with some cash added, for a 700. He said that wouldn't work because I would only be getting a replacement unit..... no retail packaging, no battery, no battery cover, no cables, etc. Foiled again.

Anyway, he said he'd waive the shipping fees and send it Fed Ex so I should get it Tuesday. I'm sure you can understand I'm going to be nervous about trying an upgrade again but I also don't think I should be using an expensive item that won't allow upgrades, so I'll bite the bullet and try it.

Interesting tidbit when I called Verizon..... you hear the automated answerer and then they give you menu choices (Press 1 for billing questions, Press 2 for Tech Support, etc.). When I got into the Technical Support section the very first choice on the menu was "Press 1 for problems with Treo". Can't help but think they must get a lot of these calls, but when I laughingly commented about that to the tech he obediently answered that those menu options are randomly selected and were not in order of incidence. He then went on to tell me what a great item it is and that it's one of their best selling products, etc. I told him I loved the item, too, but that I understood that there were some quirks (like this one) that were happening rather frequently. He said that my problem was actually a very rare one. He was definitely well-trained at his job.

Thanks for being here.... I'm sure I'll be back soon!

Default Replacement came with update installed!

OK, Fed Ex package is here, called the Verizon number listed in instructions to activate the replacement unit, poured a large cup of coffee and mustered up the courage to get on the desktop computer to again attempt the 1.05 upgrade. I was preparing myself for another fry job and was already trying to deal with going another 2-3 days without a phone when I decided to check the phone info, just in case, on the replacement 650 Verizon sent.

It has the 1.05 upgrade on there already! Needless to say, I'm shocked. Now I'm off to get all my data and software on there, and hopefully be good (or better!) than new.

I'll be back with questions, I'm sure, as I haven't really done anything to the Treo for about a year.... just been happily USING it!

    Sue
