System Tools or Repair Treo 650 (Verizon) Screen Ribbon Question/Problems

My friend just replaced his screen on his Treo 650 with a new one (both Verizon version phones) and while he was putting the phone back together he noticed that he ribbon cable for the screen of his phone was bigger than the ribbon on the screen he was replacing it with (if that makes any sense). The difference in size was signifcant.

Does anyone know if there are different versions of the screens? Are there different generations? The replacement screen's ribbon is much slimmer.

When he puts it all back together, the new screen does not power on. He takes it all apart, puts his old (cracked) screen in and it lights up fine.

He says the ribbons seem to be different. Anyone have any experience with this? Did he get the wrong screen (they were both Verizon Treo 650s)? Any advice for him? Let me know.

He bought a Treo that did not work from someone for $40. The screen will power on, and show the Palm logo on this phone, but will not boot. He took this phone appart and pulled the screen out (using the video that is bouncing around as directions), opened his phone, pulled out his screen and replaced it with the other screen he had tested. It did not light up at all. He then opened his phone back up, put his old cracked screen back in and his old screen worked fine. He tried this 3 times and could not get the other screen to work. He said it seems as if the ribbon on the replacement screen is smaller than the ribbon that is attached to the screen from his current phone. Do you know if the screens are different from one Treo 650 generation to another?? These are both Verizon Treo 650s. I have searched around the internet and have not found any variations for Treo 650 screens. It is very strange.

Thanks for your response, I was starting to think my post was invisible.

there may be some part numbers on the back or side of the screen, these are very important when matching parts. If the part visually doesnt match as far as the connector cable DONT try to force a connection, you could cause damage to all parts involved. If the screen themselves lack part numbers, you may be able to find part numbers or revision markings on the main card of the phone itself.

maybe the screen was for another treo such as a 600 or 700 like robert said look at the cracked screen and get a part number and check iyt against the new screen if they are different then theres a problem and you need to contact the place that he bought the screen from and excgane if for the right one. Who did he buy the screen from I deaslt with performanancepda.com and pdaparts.com to replace my broken 650 antenna

sounds like the wrong screen for the treo with the newer cable. Palm may have changed firmware or which ribbon leads do what....I would call one of the online shops or palm for more info. You do not want to fry the treo...

Default RE: Treo 650 (Verizon) Screen Ribbon Question/Problems Reply to Thread

Just to update: This screen came out of a Treo 650. The exact duplicate (same carrier too: Verizon) of the broken one. The Treo 650 that we took the screen out of was only able to boot to the Palm Logo.

The screens are the same size, shape and everything. The only difference seems to be the width of the ribbon cable. It is not a Treo 600 screen.

I emailed support at pdaparts.com and after posing my question was told and asked this:

Hello,
There are different manufacturers. Was the unit that you purchased working
before you took the screen out?

When I told them yes, they came back with:

Hello,
Sorry we cannot tell which manufacturer you will get. If it comes and is not compatible, let us know and we can take it back.

Kind of stumped. Sounds like at some point they switched manufacturers of the screen or the phone. Can anyone confirm this? This might be my issue.

If you have any comments on this, please let me know.

Even though its the same model, there can be varioius versions of the unit, if the screen itself has no markings, (but it should) look for stuff on the main card of the phone itself, there have got to be version numbers, (palmOne Treo650 v1.0 , 1.2 ect. ) or build dates on that thing somewhere. Even the display should have a part number on it somewhere. It may be faint, small, and near impossible to read, but thats the only way to find out which one is the right one for your good hardware. Even Copywright dates on the main card may be starting points. It may take placing some calls to a few of the parts places or rebuilders that deal with these in bulk to get someone who knows them inside & out to tell you the exact answer. I've worked with electronics, and auto parts. The more details you know about what you have, the easier it is to find what you need.
