Default Treo, to be or not to be

I had some Treo questions and I thought I'd come straight to the experts. Let me start at the beginning.

I'm going to be taking a telecommute job that will require me to be on AOL instant messenger and IRC most of the day. I'll also need to be able to use a web browser and SSH client. I've thrown around a couple of options, such as never leaving the house, TMobile hotspots plans, cellular laptop cards, and finally, a Treo with a data plan.

I've been able to find some instant messaging and SSH clients for PalmOS that seem to run on my current boss's Treo fine. And of course I know it will do email as well. Is it true you can use your Treo as an Internet connection with your laptop too? If so, it would be especially worthwhile to go this route.

Any telecommuting/Treo experts have some good advice for me?

Jeff-
I haven't personally used this, but do a search here for PDANet. You should find a good number of readers using this and will be able to get their feedback.

Here's the product overview:
Software to drive your Treo smartphone as a Wireless Modem for your PC - PdaNet allows your PC to go online by connecting to your Treo smartphone through the Hotsync USB cable or Bluetooth. If you own a Treo 650, 600, 300, 270 or 180 with CDMA data plan (Sprint/Verizon) or GPRS/EDGE service (T-Mobile, Cingular, AT&T etc.), PdaNet will make it your wireless Internet Service for your laptop/desktop computer instantly - no extra hardware or setup necessary.

PDAnet works excellent. When I first moved to my new house in the hills, I couldnt get any internet provider, and used only my treo650 for a few months. Its the fastest mobile data plan I ever used. I strongly recommend it. Give it a free try at http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/index.php
I'm sure you will find its a breeze to setup and use!

I just got a Treo 650 with Cingular service and there was a little note that claimed I couldn't use the phone as a modem unless I purchased the PC data plan instead of the (1/2 the price) unlimited PDA data plan... anyone know if that's true?
