Default Trying to update unlocked Cingular phone to Rogers?

Hey everyone I have a quesiton. I bought an unlocked Treo 650, that I guess was Cingular originally. It has software 1.17 on it. I've been told Rogers has 1.20 out now, which is who my provider is. I'd rather use that software since it says it's optimized for Rogers services. When I downloaded the update, it says failed though, that a Cingular phone can't be upgraded to an unknown software. So I have a couple questions, is this possible first all? And secondly, if I download the Cingular 1.20 software and update, will that lock the phone again or screw it up on Rogers at all? Thanks!

    Is your Treo working fine?

I'm going through the same thing, but I'm not sure if the issue is one of a carrier/software glitch, or a physical problem with my hardware.

Yeah my Treo works perfectly fine, no need to upgade. It's just that I'm in Canada with Rogers, and this treo has hot buttons to like check air time and stuff, all relating to Cingular which obviously don't work on Rogers. I was hoping the Rogers software would do something similar more specific to me, but no go.. Was going to update anyway since it says it improves call quality and such, by using the Cingular update, but just don't want it to lock it on me...

that is the danger of buying "unlocked" branded phones. They may be unlocked, but they are not converted to generic roms in most cases. There are programs and hacks out there, but it could cripple your device more than help it if things go wrong. You can "edit the favorites pages and move those links all the way to page five, and program in the rogers equivolents if the company has them. To do this, pull up the favorites page, then menu key, select "edit favorites pages, then drag & drop the Cingular specific stuff to page 5 or any other page number thats out of the way, and click Done when you have them where you want them. At least the subsidy lock is off where you can use other companies sim cards. Have you asked Rogers if they could flash the phone for you? (of course, then it could be locked to them) I would avoid the Cingular updates for the very reason you mentioned about it being re-locked to their service.

I bought my 650 on ebay and it was supposed to be a Cingular phone but it turned out to be an ATT wireless which I inlocked through an on line service and then updated the rom to cingular 1.17 If you unlock it and then flash the rom with the Rogers rom update it probably would work okay I would think. I know from posts here at ET that Rogers does not like phones you havent bought through them on their system so it might be problematic for you.

ABSOLUTELY DONT Use the cingular updater if you are on Rogers. from the Palm website...
"If you are not a Cingular Wireless customer, do not download this version of the software. It contains carrier-specific requirements that are incompatible with non-Cingular phones."
Also , from the Rogers section of the updates area....

That being said, it MAY be possible to do ROM hacks to accomplish this, BUT, those could also trash the phone, or your unlock status. Proceeed with caution if you attempt those yourself.

Yeah I think I'll just leave it. I might go to Rogers and see if they will flash it. In response to the above post though, I've never heard that about Rogers only wanting you to use their phones. Telus does for sure but they are CDMA. Even if you buy a model CDMA phone they carry but that was on another carrier unlocked it won't work with them. Rogers is fine with using any. When you sign into the self service part of their website, it even has the option to "Switch my handset" and it just asks for the new EMI or whatever it is number and your sim number. When I joined Rogers, I had purchased a new sim card off ebay, then an unlocked blackberry. Just called subscribed to a package, gave them the sim card number and the black berry number and that was it. Was really easy.

No way. That's awesome. Maybe I'll give that a try. Did it cost anything?

The only thing it cost was the $200 to get out of my Telus contract! I just called 1-866-Rogers-01 or whatever their toll free number is, I said I want to subscribe, that I have a new sim card and unlocked phone. We picked a plan, he asked that I read him the sim card number and the EMEI from the phone and that was it. He never mentioned once where I got the phone from or if I wanted one of theirs.

All Cellular transactions with the provider should be that easy. I recently left Sprint to Cingular by porting the number and they put a "financial hold" on my call for a bill that wasnt even due them for another 20 days. I DID like Sprint, and was leaving for other reasons, but they guaranteed I wont be back. Glad to hear Rogers is that custormer oriented.
