Default Verizon SUCKS - $80/mo for data!

I had a Kyocera 7135 with Verizon before and all was good. It broke and I was shipped a Treo 650. They put me on a pay as you go plan which first month came to $85. all I do is pop my email with snapper. what a rip off.
Then I decided to change to Unlimited at $49 per month.
But no, since I have a family plan, it's $79 per month.
Even though my other phone is the cheapy phone that has no email or anything, they charge $79 per month for data.

Has anyone else had this experience? I am with Verizon in Los Angeles.

I've tried dial up using snapper but it won't work.

***************UPDATE*******************
I just called Verizon back 30 minutes leter and got a totally different answer.
As it turns out, I added the PDA/Smartphone data package that's $44.99 if you also have voice minutes and $49.99 if you don't.
here's the link:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/s...tail&catId=329

The rep I spoke to earlier was trying to put me on the Broadband Access plan that uses a PCMCIA card for a Laptop. The Verizon reps need to understand that the Treo 650 does not use PCMCIA cards.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I'm going to bite the bullet and pay the $44.99 per month to get unlimited data minutes. I've been trying to get dial up to work for this whole month and am getting nowhere. Plus it's so slow it's unusable.

Conclusion, I'm starting to really enjoy the Treo 650. I'm still miss the Kyocera 7135.

Verizon Wireless is really the factor that I can do with out here. Got to be the worst trained reps I've ever dealt with.

I haven't heard of this. I'm with Cingular -- have a family plan and my Treo has a data plan. My wife (and her Motorola) have doesn't have any data plan.

If that is indeed the case, that does suck. Have you tried calling "customer service roulette"? Maybe you just got someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. Verizon owners...want to chime in?

Chris, how is Cingular? Can I ask you how much they charge for unlimited data? Cingular/T-mobile is putting up 2 cell sites near my house and I'd love to dump Verizon asap.

Customer service roulette is exactly right. As you can see by my UPDATE above, that's exactly what happened to me.

Default Verizon user - Treo wannabe

I've been a Verizon account holder for 2 years now. I would love to go to Sprint, but family ties with Verizon phones may prevent me from switching.

I have been reading all the threads to help me in my future purchase.

I just worry about Palm dumping their own software if Windows gets too popular. I also wonder what is on the horizon and am I getting into this too late. I also see Earthlink's Wireless Service with a very nice Treo 650 deal at $99.

I'll keeping reading and I hope you'll have comments.

Service is good - I haven't noticed a difference between my last provider (Sprint) and Cingular. I signed up a while ago and got their Media Works Unlimited Package -- which is no longer. At the time, it was $20 and I continue to pay that. Not sure if it truely is "unlimited". That being said, I've never been charged for additional usage -- and I use it excessively.

Default Download speeds

Can you tell me what kind of speed you are seeing with the Treo on Verizon's network? Thanks.

I had the same problem. My Kyocera 7135 was disconnected and when Verizon couldn't reactivate they offerred me a Treo 650. They never bothered to tell me that WEB access would go from $5.99 to $44.99/mo!! True it is faster but is a lot of $$ to spend for email. The "Blazer" web browser should be called "SlowPoke". I did get PDANet and use the phone as a modem for my laptop occasionally. This works great. At least I am getting something for my $44.99/mo extra.

Sounds familiar. I finally gave up on dial up because it's really slow and I never knew what or when Verizon was charging me for data. So I also signed up for the $44.99 data service and am using it like there's no tomorrow. It's nice to have reliable data now.

Blazer is really slow. When I tether to my Laptop and use Internet Explorer, it's much faster than using the handset and Blazer. Which is weird to me.

Wonder if there is faster and better browser then Blazer?

You might want to check out Xiino - it's supposed to be faster.

Thanks, I'll give it try. any idea why applications while tethering a loptop run faster than on the handset? I guess it's gotta be the software itself.
