Calling all gurus.....or one good one ?

Just got a used 650 locked (Cingular/AT&T) without the CD or manual. Downloaded a manual and Desktop but still have some questions. I’ve read many threads on several sites the information is scattered and non-specific in some cases. Hope there's help to be had here.....
I’d greatly appreciate anyone’s help/advice on how to proceed on several fronts, namely:
--- Do I buy/beg/steal a 650 CD or just download desktop ver 4.1.4e (which I’ve done but not installed) ? Assume either will allow me to transfer old records ? (I’ve got a ton of old contacts, etc from my Visor Deluxe and am using Desktop version 4.0.1 on my XP laptop).
--- Do a hard reset first before synching to PC, right ?
--- Do I do a firmware upgrade first ? (how do I check the version I’ve got in case that’s already been done ? previous owner had an IT guy and seller doesn’t know what’s been done to it). Afraid to try custom ROM stuff for now so will just use Palm site's updates.
--- I plan on getting it unlocked soon for overseas usage, so should I get that done before anything else or does it matter ? If I unlock it first do I select the firmware update for a "GSM Unlocked" or "AT&T" on Palm's update site ?

The Treo is working fine so far. I’ve had it turned on and occasionally off for 4 days – works great, no freezes !!!. All software appears to be functioning (not sure about web browser as my plan is cell only). I’ve heard horror stories about such things, but forums like this convinced me a Treo was the way to go. So far I love it !

Lot of questions and I hope I am following your train of thought.

If your treo is at&t use the desktop and upgrades for that carrier. If and when you unlock the phone you may need to use different upgrades. But I think you want to use AT&T and have the phone unlocked, right? I believe if and when you unlock the treo the treo loses your info. So make sure you have a backup or have a good sync.

Yes you should do a hard reset before syncing (first time)or entering any info on the phone. At the palm site make sure that your palmdesktop is the right one for the phone.

I would wait on the firmware upgrade and even the unlocking for awhile to verify your phone works and is stable in case you need to return it (ifyou can)

For your version I believe at the phone screen, hit menu, options, phone info and your version should be listed.
