Where do you all download music from?
I've been looking at iTunes, Yahoo, Walmart, etc for a good place to download music. but don't like these sitesor they don't have songs I'm looking for.
I'm looking for a place with no monthly subscription, pay per song, and the downloaded song can be used on the Treo or any other mp3 player.
Just like old Napster or Morpheus except you pay.

Personally, I try to stay away from the those Russian sites. There's another one too, I can't think of what it is called, but I've read that those sites don't always pay the artists what they are supposed to, if they pay any royalties at all.
I really like eMusic. I've been very happy with them. Way more indie than the others, but I've found some great music there. And, their prices are great. And, you are getting MP3s, so they are playable on anything that plays MP3s.
Other than that, I've gone back to buying discs just so that I can play the music on anything I own.

Good inputs. The problem that I'm having is that my musical taste is not too mainstream. so for example, today I'm in the mood for some of Megadeath, Motorhead, Social Distortion, Wasted Youth, Circle One, etc. If I was into Britney Spears that would be easier.

why not get limeware? It has just about everything, ive Dl'ed tons of mp3s to my treo from their......not to mention you can usually get them in about 30 seconds or less

Tried limewire and its great. i found all the stuff I didn't think i could find. a lot of it is not even available for purchase at stores.
Thanks for the pointer.

all of this raises an interesting debate, particularly around P2P stuff inc limeware. if i understand the arguement the software is legal but what you do with it isn't. bit like a gun is legal, but shooting someone isn't.
i'm also intrigued by freezingprocess's comments.stance and the juxtaposition of his "sig"!
hey ho, the internet eh?

I appreciate your acknowledgement of the contrasting ideas. Its funny to me how un-black and white the topic is. Being a musician and a consumer I see the topic from both sides way too clearly. On the one hand, the musician in me wants to make sure that I get compensated properly for my work. On the other hand, as a consumer, I enjoy far more music than my wallet can handle.
When I see people using P2P services I simultaneously cringe and nod understandingly.

The internet has changed everything. Think about how reliant we are on email, search engines, eBay, blogs, and now the ability to take anything digital, like music and movies, and simply send electronically.
So the real question is, how do the record labels control distribution of their property? Or how can they get people to buy their cd's in a store?
I have no idea.

Smart Phone Idiot
I actually found two of my bands songs on Kazaa once! At first I was very flattered . . Then I got very mad!! We give a lot of our music away and make it a point not to keep too much in the band bank account . . . We are not trying to make it in the music biz, but we do incur some heavy expenses in our travels . . . Especially, with what Gas has become lately . . . . I can gripe about someone "sharing" my music, but at the same time, I have some software that I was going to "try out" that I downloaded from kazzaa a couple of years ago . . . I still use it from time to time . . . . . . So even I am guilty, even though I understand the "owner's" frustrations . . . .
I am not into online music sales actually. I am still purchasing the CD and ripping to my Treo/Zen. For what its worth, I have a buddy who brags all the time about Walmart. I think I would have Shady's problem with Walmart. My tastes in music wouldn't be found at Walmart.com . . . .
