    Default 680 Issues

Ok, I've always been a supporter of palm, but I think the Quality of the devices is diminishing. For Instance, I just got a new Treo 680, and withing 24 Hours the touchscreen completely quit working. I sent it back for a new one and the replacement keeps rebooting when I plug the USB cable in for a Sync.

Am I the only one palm is punishing?

I have had my Treo 680 since Nov 24th and have not had any problems with it at all. I have read through these boards that if you had a previous model you cannot just hotsync and be on your way. You do need to run the CD that came with the Treo 680. Most people that have reported problems, was caused by just syncing the new treo with the old information.

    Default LOV my 680

I have had my 680 since middle of Dec. Used it in US / Peru / Chile. It is in my hand all the time. Other than the early batter issues I have had no problem with it. It did freeze once when I began pushing buttons rapidly at random.

Wife has Blackjack. I like 680 a who lot better than it.

Have had my 680 for almost a month now and have not had any problems with it, except ones I caused myself. I use it all day, email, text msg, phone, and a couple games to kill time, and it has been perfect.

Yes, I'm having problems that sound like this. DO you have a link or any explanation on this problem?

    Much appreciated.

the problem with doing this is old system files could be synced that are incompatible with the treo 680, as well as incompatible apps. Running the install for the newer version of palm desktop will catch MOST problems. Taking shortcuts like not reading manuals or install instructions usually doubles to quadruples your headaches. For those who just grabbed the 680 right out of the box and sync'ed with your older software, here is what you need to do.... (this DOES NOT apply to those who did things right and still are having issues)
    1. Mutter explitives at yourself for taking the easy way and complicating things. Now, do a "once more for safety" hotsync.
    2. Open "My computer" and "explore" C:> or whatever your hard drive is named. Go to your palm folder, either "C:\Palm" or "C:\Program Files\Palm" (Do I hear 'PalmOne' anyone?) and find your personal storage folder. (thats the one that is named after your hotsync name, sort of)
    3. Copy this folder to a safe place- just in case. That way if there is any current data loss, you are covered.
    4. Read your manual on the "installing" section, see if it tells you to uninstall the old palm stuff first. If it does, thats why you made the safety copy of your personal folder. If it does not say that, just throw the 680 cd in and go with the on screen instructions.
    5. After installing the new Palm Desktop, you should have good data on the computer, and your 'bad' files should now be in an "incompatible apps" folder. confirm data is on the Palm Desktop, just like it is on your 680.
    6. If the data matches, do a hard reset on your phone. Why? To clear out any old clutter that may have carried over from a previous device that doesnt work with the 680.
    7. Perform a hotsync to get your data back in place, minus old bugs.

Most of the glitches I encountered while playing with my 650 were caused when i tried to use condemned apps from my old Palm 3.5.2 device to the 650. Some caused me to have to do a full hard reset with no backup, thank goodness i didnt have anything worth being worried about on the treo. I imagine the 680 problems are the same way.

Default Upgrading Palm Software w/data from older device

Thanks Robert93. I did just take the CD out of the box and installed it fresh on my Mac, and all was well. Palm desktop was already on my PC and without upgrading the software from my 650, the synch didn't work. There was no recognized connection b/w the 680 and the PC. Once I installed the 680 palm software, the synch worked fine and dandy and I had all my data transferred!

I found the 680 User Guide and I'm pasting part of the section about upgrades here:

IMPORTANT Do not synchronize your Treo
680 with any previous versions of
    Palm Desktop software.....

Step 3. Synchronize your previous device with
your previous desktop software to back
up your information one last time.

Step 4. Install the desktop synchronization
software from your new Palm Software
    Installation CD
So it is telling you to install directly over the previous palm software, without uninstalling. I backed my data folder up just in case.

I found that Hobbyist Software has great products for the 680, including Initiate which completely solved the lag times that I was experiencing when opening programs. Try it ... I can guarantee that it will help you to love your Palm again. Also a little program called Reset Doctor which help to pin down what programs are hanging up when your Palm crashes.
