Hi everyone, I'm a first time Treo user after my nokia n80 for flooded in a heavy storm. I thought the n80's got really limited battery life as it only lasts me 1 day of heavy usage.
But I'm disappointed to say that the battery life of the 680 is much lesser than that. I Tried adjusting the screen brightness to its lowest but after a few hours of standby time, it only reads at 67% of battery life left whereas my nokia would stil read a full charge!
This has been talked about in GREAT detail here and other places. It ranges from doing a full/extended charge, letting it run down real low, then a full/extended charge again.
Some people call it a "battery reset."
The thing with the 680 is that in order to get it "slimmer," the battery size had to be cut down. There is or should be in the near future a Seido battery out with a bit more horse power.
Palm did this because other "slim" phones did it and their users accepted the bad battery life for the "slim" look.

Well treo due tend to have shorter battery life than most phones. The best thing you could do is get an alternative battery. There are two right now. First one is the 2400mahz which offers 33% more time than the defualt. Next there is a 3200mahz (which requires a special case(which is included)) which offers 77% more time over the default battery.
Getting alternative battery will increase the weight and make the device a little warmer over long term use.
You could also get extra chargers if you don't want to get an extra battery.
You could get a car charger, office charger, and etc.
Look at the ET store for more details on the products.
*NOTE: some of the alternative batteries might not support the 680 yet, but will soon*

looks like i'll have to live with the short battery life?
I've already severely limiting the usage of my treo at work today. I won't last me a day if I'm gonna use it as per normal like how I use my n80. I miss it.
If you have a desk job, bring the sync cable with you and plug it into the USB port of the PC at work, wit will charge all day while at work. If not, get a second charger cable and use a wall outlet. When you leave your desk, take the phone with you.
I have a treo 680 and do not work at a desk, so my Treo is with me in my pocket all day at work. I might make a phone call on my breaks, or play a game or right down some notes in DayNotez. I am always checking Agendus to complete tasks and see where my next appointment/meeting might be. By the end of the day when I get home I am still at anywhere between 59% and 67% charge left. I usually plug the treo into the pc to sync and leave it all night long and in the morning it is fully charged. I am not having any issues regarding battery life.
Granted the battery life is much shorter than my RAZR, but then again, the Treo is SO much MORE than the RAZR. However every night the RAZR went back on the charger as well.
After a solid month now, I think the battery life is improving as I am using the Treo more frequently and not noticing any drop in the charge.
I use the Treo as an MP3 Player in the car as well as its phone and PDA features and I find between it sitting plugged in on the computer and it pluged in on the car with Mp3 Harness that I never dip below about 50%. I am permantely texting or talking or fudgen with the phone. It has much better life then my flip cell phone did.
I still waiting for my Treo 680 but I have read that after using the camara, a process keeps going even if you stop using the camara and makes the battery die faster, they said after making a cradle reset and not using the camara this gets corrected, at least untill Palm makes some update
they are coming out with an exstended battery for the 680 which will be thicker and will come with a different battery cover which will thicker as well to accomodate the larger battery. May not look or feel as good as the regular 680.
Another thing to remember is that initiating a network connection is easy, turning it off is a pain now that they removed Disconnect from the browser menu.
I have left it on by accident quite a few times. Staying connected, even when not downloading anything, requires more juice since it has to handshake to keep the connection alive.
In summary:
The Disconnect command was under the Options menu on the Treo 600 Web Browser.
The 680, a number greater then 600, now has it buried in the Prefs > Network > Disconnect menu. (Note to Palm UI engineers: 680 > 600, which should mean a step FORWARD in usability. In general, upgrades to the UI should make it easier for folks to perform a given task. Jacob Nielsen, if he were to use a 680, would stomp on it.)
That's an advancement in UI design?
I can't wait 'til Apple whoops Palm into submission.
