Bought 3 Treo 680s here, and have had two replaced - so out of 5 Treo 680s, 4 have had this problem. My new one hasn't yet but I haven't really gone anywhere to lose service yet - but it will probably be 5 out of 5, soon. Most of the time it stops saying "Network Search" and shows garbage characters there... sometimes soft reset will get hung up on Network Search a second time... second soft reset fixes it. We figure its a software problem, perhaps if it takes too long to find the network, it just hangs instead of trying again.

I've gone one week without the problem after changing the SIM. The old SIM I used in the 680 had come from my Mot V551. The replacement SIM was brand new.

very good knock on wood. Funny how a $400.00 phone is at the mercy of a tiny piece of plastic and silicon worth what about a buck.

On a similar note, I've been getting repeated problems sending text messages lately. Sending the text message fails with one of these two errors: 407A or 4058.
This is via Cingular Wireless in the SF Bay Area. I had full bars showing with the EDGE triangle present as well. It was fine for the month or so I've had the phone, but then I got about four of these errors in two days.
I hope it's a fluke, and not a symptom of my phone deteriorating.

with respect to error message 4058 there is anothjer thread in this forum on that message if you will do a search for 4056 it will take you that thread that hopefully will solve that problem. Good luck.
