center button and Call forwarding

We have set up my wifes phone with a bunch of Favorites. One being Call Forwarding Off. If she selects this and uses the center button to make the call the phone (about 80% of the time) goes into an Alert screen (blank) and doesn't make the connection. If she uses the quick dial key we set up, it makes the connection and we don't get the Alert screen. Any ideas what might be going on?
She could just use the quick dial key, but we have been having some problems (freezing once and a while - comes out of it itself) with the phone and are wondering if this is one more issue.

Took the phone back because of freezing issues. However solved the center button one - if you hold it down too long (my wife was) it then goes into alerts.
