    Default Installing Java on 680

I'm wanting to install both the gmail app and Opera Mini, but I apparently need a Java VM installed. I've tried installing IBM's websphere, but it tells me it's only for the 650 and 700. Anyone have any suggestions?

I struggling with the same problem on my Treo 680. Thanks for that Palm issue id, but that refers to timeouts. I have more a basic issue of where do I download Java support from? The Palm website referring to it: http://software.palm.com/us/html/dis...&id=prod250525
explicitly states only for 650 and 700p.

Anyone downloaded it anyway and found it works on the 680?

    regards,
    David.

Welcome to ET sorry I dont have a 680 and I cant find anything newer at palm.com that says its supported on the 680 for now. Theres a conference of some sort for java on the palm set for early next month so maybe theiy are working on it. It seems like they would have made it compatable from the get go with java apps, but who knows?

Have you tried to install it on the 680? Doing a backup first (preferably a device based backup) and then install it - a hard reset and restoring from the backup will put you back to where you were before the install. The site to download Java from is: http://www.palm.com/us/support/jvm/download.html

I didn't play around with it any at all, but I don't think that Opera mini is compatible with the 680. I installed both webphere and Opera mini on my 680. Everytime I went to launch mini, it would either create a soft reset, or I would get some sort of License error. When I would try to utilize the menu button, it didn't recognize it as a menu button. Also, sometimes, if I would shut it off, and back on, the lock window that appears at the bottom, would appear at the top, but only covering about 1/2 of the width of the screen. After about 4 soft resets, I figured it wasn't going to run on the 680, and deleted both mini and websphere.

Thanks for all the input guys. I've been using the default browser and I guess I'm getting use to it. I don't know enough about the Treo 680 nor do I have the time I'd like to play with it to experiment around. I do love chattermail though! I'm still looking for the "got to have" GPS application and would be interested in whatever apps you guys think rock.

I spoke with a person this afternoon who recently tried Java with his 680 and was unable to get it running properly - resets, et cetera. Ben

Got Java working, thanks for the advice guys.... downloaded from the link you gave me, so I didn't have to pay. Soft reset and I was away.
When I then downloaded the gmail app, the key was to Save, not Open the downloaded file. Java recognised it, and opened it as a Java app.
So now I can either run Gmail direct from the app icon, or from Java.

Strange thing is though.... the Gmail app is rather disappointing... big fonts, few messages visible, not able to link emails to your contact list. With the constant updating Google do, I'm sure it will become a great app in time, but meanwhile, I going continue to use Versamail.

I haven't been won over by Chattermail yet... but that's for another thread.

Stillrockin.... I have the same issue with you and the Opera browser... comes up with a license request, and fails to work. But it doesn't look as good as Blazer anyway. But that is also a question for another thread.

Thanks for your help guys and gurls.

    Yours, happy Treo-newbie.

I downloaded the free IBM Websphere buried deep on the Palm site and installed it with no problem on my 680.

Got to say, I've taken to ignoring most of Palm's dire warnings or lack of info on recent products as I believe they haven't a clue. But I digress...

I've not yet trid Opera Mini on the 680 (tried it on my TX and found it highly overrrated) but I do know that one had to tweak some settings to make it work without crashing the TX - I'm assuming the same with the 680 -

Mobile Java for Mini Opera – settings from Palm’s Preferences screen

    - Double buffering
    - High resolution
    - Maximum Java thread to 32 kb

    Hope this helps.
