MP3 as ringtone...

Am I correct in assuming that, like the 650, the 680 requires third party software to use MP3 files as ringtones?

You are correct! Minitunes is a popular freeware program to accomplish this.

I use Minitones on mine, and I LOVE IT! When you launch it, it automatically finds all your music, then you can just choose which song you want to make into a ringtone. You can even trim it down to not play the entire song. Once it's saved, just go into sound prefs and choose it as the ringtone. EASY :laugh3:

I just tried minitunes, it's fantastic! I now have "Scotland the Brave" as my phone ring.......very cool!

i have some ringtones down loaded in ptunes but mini tunes did not find them, does it have to be full songs for it to work

I think it doesn't matter if it's part of a song,something like the ringtones you've got don't support minitones
