This is what I do:

1. Pick a song from itunes. Make sure it is mp3 format. Sometimes itunes songs are in mp4, so convert it.
2. Drag that song to your desktop.
3. Drag that song onto the "Send to Handheld" icon that should be on your desktop. This should have been installed when you used your Treo software installation disk.
4. Perform a hotsync.
5. Install Minitones on your treo. (this may actually be step 1)
6. Go to minitones and that song that you synced should be in there. Select it and then you can trim the song to the part you want as a ringtone.
7. After trimming, add it.
8. Go to Sounds and select Manage and your new mp3 self made ringtone should be in there.

I hope this helps, good luck.

The problem with using Minitones and the resulting ring tones is that those ring tones live in RAM and a few of them lead up to the NO MEMORY disease. A ring tone management application that utilizes MP3 (and similar files) and the card is a much better approach. Applications to look at: LightWav, RingCare, CallBlock and similar applications. For conversions with these applications, I use the free release of Switch. Ben

One thing that you can do is to download "Minitones" from this website at no cost. Another is to use Blazer. Blazer First of all, don't connect to the internet. If the file is in the root directory of the card, go to the address line at the top of Blazer and type: file:///filename. If it is in a folder on the card, type file:///foldername/filename. If you've input it correctly, a dialog box will come up and instruct you how to set it up as a ringtone. For more information, you can contact Palm Support's free Chat group. They will send you the link to the documentation on their site. I've found them to be very helpful. Bill
