I went from a 600 to my new Crimson 680. Some of my observations:

-Floating Appointment feature gone from calendar. On my 600, clicking New on the calendar brought up a list of five different things (Floating Appointment being one of them). Clicking New now goes straight to the time chooser.

-Can't disconnect from the web browser. The 600's web browser (not Blazer) had Disconnect in the menus. Now I have to go Home > Prefs > Network > Disconnect.

-Incredibly, the interface is more sluggish than my 600's. This one I cannot explain at all. I even notice that my clock takes a second or two to update when I click on the Home icon. It'll display the time from when I last had it on for a half second, then update to the current time. Please don't try to defend this as no big deal! This is incredulous!

So far, I am not very impressed, especially comparing its performance to that of my 600, which is ancient. I dropped the 600 so many times I can't even forget, yet it still works fine. (The best was when I had it on my car's dash, windows open, hard left turn. The 600 goes flying out the passenger's side window and onto the street. I stopped, walked back to pick it up...lo and behold it started ringing. I picked it up, answered, and that was that!)

Anyway, some minor annoyances, but the interface lagging is the one that requires me to state that this should have been called a 580, not a 680, when compared to my 600. Every click, every keyboard entry takes a half second more than on my 600. It seems like it's having trouble keeping up with my entries.

And just to note: when I check my memory, I show Free Space: 60.2M of 69M, so it's not a full memory issue.

Should I get a new one? Or is this "just how it is?"

Well maybe you got a bad one...........I am glad I am waiting intil the 750 comes out before I upgrade. I have had a 600 and now I have a 650.I want to get a 680 but after reading your post I think I will just wait until the 750 to upgrade. I thought the 680 would be a lot better than the 600/650 but I guess not.

It's nicer looking and flashier, but not better, not IMHO. I will soon start compiling more details on what the issues are, but in summary I find that accessing certain items takes more keystrokes than with my 600; the new OS is less intuitive.

Also, due to the lag I talked about, I find myself waiting for the OS to catch up. So as you start entering keystrokes faster than it can keep up, you think it didn't accept (but it did, albeit slowly) your initial keystroke, retype it, then you just screwed up (well, the OS did, but Palm would never admit it).

This lag reminds me of my Comcast Motorola DCT6412 HD Dual-Tuner DVR. There has been A LOT of complaining about its UI and how slow it is. So, Comcast in an act of brilliant PR, said that in order to 'fix' this issue that users should slow down when entering commands on their remote control!

    I can see it now:

"Hi, this is Dick Thomson, Chief Architect of the Palm OS. I've been reading with great interest about users who are disappointed with the speed of Palm OS 5.4.9, which I dubbed Garnet after a soiree I had in Paris in the early 60's with an eponymously named woman. Well, I've done some research and in order to address this bug, I've come up with the following fix: SLOW DOWN YOUR INPUT. This patch works on 100% of the units we tested in-house. Furthermore, if you find yourself not being able to slow down, we have developed a utility. This utility, when installed, takes the frequency of the Intel processor from 312MHz to 5Hz. This naturally slows your Palm down to your brain's own internal speed. With your brain and the brain of the Palm device in sync, no input errors are bound to occur. Hope this helps!"

    Default Battery so bad...

my battery was fully charged when i left the house this morning at 8am, it is 415pm, i've made 4 calls at the most, checked the internet twice, and my battery is dead. this is the second time in three days it's happened.

Is this normal suck-age, or do i need to start making phone calls...?

    Speak to me, treo nation!
