Default Palm Desktop

OK, what am I missing here?

I go to the Treo680_UG_ATT.pdf file that I received with my phone and it says on page 116 of the UG or 122 in the PDF version that this phone supports MIDI and ACC file types as valid ring tones. It also states that it supports MP3 file types. However, I go to the PALM DESKTOP and look for a mechanism to transfer these MIDI ring tones to the phone and the obvious choice on the left side of the desk top is MEDIA. So I choose MEDIA and look at the VALID file types and MIDI does NOT exist, nor does MP3.

Can someone help me here? Is there a newer Palm Desktop that does support these file types? Is there a way to add these file types on the desktop so they can be transferred to the phone?

BTW, the PALM DESKTOP I am using is ver 4.2 which was on the CD that with the phone

Might you be speaking of the Quick Install function? I have not played with these types at all. A suggestion though, a card based ring-tone management application will save you TONS of main device memory and provide you with a lot of functionality that the default management system does not provide.

No, the question is using the Treo 680 with the provided Palm DeskTop software that you get when you receive your NEW phone, that runs on a windows based desktop. The Palm desktop is supposed to be the conduit for transferring files, and I emphasize files, between the Treo and the desktop, because it really shouldn't make any difference to the palm what the file type is. It is just another file. The UG indicated that the Treo supports MIDI files as well as MP3's and my question still stands, How do you transfer these file types to and fro?

To my limited knowledge, the Treo does not support MP3/WAV files in main memory, as a result, you cannot sync them to main memory using the Palm Desktop. In order to get the files to the Palm, they have to be sync'd to the card.

To accomplish this, a card reader is an excellent solution or if you are a Bluetooth user as I am, there are software solutions that will accomplish this. I use Bluefiles and Card Reader to do this; Card Reader also supports USB file transfers.

You will achieve better memory performance and frankly device performance if you use a ring-tone management program that uses files stored on the card. Applications include LightWav, RingCare, CallBlock, Ringo, et cetera. I have tried LightWav and it is excellent, though overkill for me. I have licenses for RingCare and CallBlock and use RingCare exclusively. I have never gotten Ringo to work satisfactorily. There is also mRing that I place in the same category as Ringo.
