In case you aren't aware, the Palm OS is essentially dead. There will be no new devices with the Palm OS as you know it. A new OS is due for release in the spring called Nova and is based on the Linux code.

When you say you acquired the 680, was it off eBay, Craig'sList or through a dealer? It is obvious you have a Cingular device that was unlocked and who knows what software version was loaded?

If you can't return it for a working unit, really the only hope you might have is to do a hard reset and try to start over. I am not sure what you mean by this:
"Treo refused to accept the precribed mathods to hard reset"

Here is a link to all the various resets.

I was a Palm faithful for more than ten years and after struggling with a 650 for three, I have moved on to BlackBerry. I do hope Palm can get its act together, but I am not hopeful.

The 650, 680 and the 700 were not their proudest moments....

If you plan on sticking with the Palm OS, take a look at the new Centros. More memory and probably the best Treo like device made by Palm. If moving on is not a problem, the 800W (I have it) was recently discontinued and may be purchased used. The newest one by Palm in the WM world is the Palm Pro, aka 850. Lots of memory, not too large, a keypad similar to the Centro and very stable for most people. In addition, an application called Style Tap is available that allows you to run most Palm OS applications.
