Have just posted on MCE Post:

"Have just bought TomTom Navigator 5, on eBay, and have installed it on my 680, as version 6 will not work yet. The software is foolproof, you can't install ver6 with ver5 maps. TomTom are very clever in that regard, so you can't rig things. You just have to pay the money to get things to work properly.
I use a TomTom Bluetooth GPS device, but interestingly the Navigator software can find the GPS but the Palm can't. However it works fine."

Default Tom Tom Navigator 5.201 and Treo 680

Hello Chris,

My name is Bob and I live in Antwerp, Belgium.
As I am not at all familiar with forums you'll have to excuse me if this one is posted incorrect but anyway here goes:
Since a few years, I own a Palm Tungsten T3 and I'm thinking of buying a Treo 680 but there are some outstanding questions that kept me from purchasing.
I bought my T3 bundled with what used to be called Tom Tom Navigator for Palm Tungsten T3.
At that time it was Navigator version 4 and something (don't recall).
Later, I upgraded to version 5 and current version is Navigator 5.201
It is a wired GPS.
My question is whether I can continue using that particular version of Tom Tom Navigator on the Treo 680 without a hassle.
If so, can I still use the wired GPS which is connected with the carholder that came with the Tungsten or will I be unable to connect the wired receiver one way or the other to the Treo.
If I cannot use the wired receiver anymore, will it be possible to connect via a wireless bluetooth receiver and if so what type would you suggest (prefer to stick with a Tom Tom receiver if possible).
I don't seem to be able to find the solution anywhere on the internet until I stumbled on this forum so I hope you can clarify some things for me.

Thanks for any reply.
Bob

Bob,

Your version 5.21 will work perfectly with the Treo680. Do you mean the SD slot when you say "card holder", then you have a problem as all the map data has to go on the SD card. The 680 does not have the same synch/power connection as the Tungstens, so you wont be able to connect there, I think you will need a new GPS- bluetooth device.

Sorry BigPond I meant carholder not cardholder.
From your reply I understand I will not encounter any specific issues with the software version but I will need to buy a wireless receiver.
One more question (I'm not that technical) will a SIRF III be compatible or do I need to buy myself an older receiver version.

Bob,

Yes SIRF111 is fine, which is what the TomTom receiver is. Setting up the software with another receiver could be a bit problematical, but the software likes its own receiver, and I have had no problem with it.
One issue is that the software might find the SIRF111 receiver but won't register the signal strength on the desktop of another model. However the TomTom receiver is a bit more expensive.

Appreciate the quick response BigPond.
Everything's clear to me now, so I can purchase.
Hope the software doesn't mind the switch from the T3 to the Treo 680 though (activiation codes and so).

Many thanks

You should be able to transfer the S/W to a new unit, just use the product keys etc on the software box and registration card.
Good luck.

You shouldn't have any problems. I transferred my TomTom Navigator from the Treo 650 to the 700p without any issues.

Good luck. Report back when you're set-up.

Hello Chris, Michael,

I received the Treo 680 last Friday and I had no issues whatsoever to transfer all data from the Tungsten T3 to the Treo.
I first hotsynced outlook data only and then started installing the third party applications that were on the T3 one by one via the original backup I had copied to a different folder on my desktop.
Since I had Navigator 5.102 installed on the SD card it came up with the message that I had to get an activation code for the map (Benelux map in my case) that was on the SD card since the device code (Treo680) was a different code from the one I was initially using (T3) and therefor the message referred me to the TomTom site where I could find that code.
I encountered no issues to retrieve a new activation code for all maps I had purchased earlier since I had the 5.201 Tom Tom product code.
So, all that went smoothly.
However, I had expected the GPS receiver (the new bluetooth SIRF III) to pickup a satellite signal more quickly then the wired receiver I was using up to then which was an older receiver version.
But picking up a satellite signal takes a lot longer and sometimes only a soft reset seems to result in the retrieval of such a signal.
From what I understand the new receiver can pick upto 20 satellites signals where the older version can only pick up about five.
Moreover, from what I understand, the new receiver should still remember the last position of the satelites after the receiver is switched off in order to faster pick up a signal at next switch on.
After I paired the receiver with the 680 and added it to my trusted devices, the only change I have made was to switch the type of receiver from wired to bluetooth in the Tom Tom software preferences.
I am wondering whether I have overlooked some settings somewhere or do I have to perform any additional steps.
For the rest I am very pleased with the 680 specially with the fact that I can do so much more without the need of using a stylus, and the shortcuts I can create on the favourites tab in the phone application are a big help to me.
So, best wishes to everyone and if you still have any tips on improving the signal receipt I would appreciate.

Bob-
Sounds like you are doing quite well with your Treo 680. My only beef with the TomTom GPS (or possibly my Treo) is the connection between the GPS Receiver and the Treo. There are times that it doesn't see it, yet it's one of my trusted devices. I find that cycling my Bluetooth connection fixes this and it's something you might want to consider in lieu of a soft reset.
