Treo 680 and T-Mobile - Advice?
I have been a loyal T-Mobile user since Voicestream. I have never been very satisfied with their hardware offerings, however the service has been very reliable and I travel regularly to Europe. I have always purchased whatever unlocked phone that I want and simply used the service.
I currently have a Nokia 6681 and am considering upgrading to an unlocked Treo 680. I would like to stay with T-Mobile because my wife and I are both using the service and there are financial benefits to staying within the same network.
Here's my question(s)
Other than simply inputting my Sim Card in the phone, what are the other configurations that I would need to input to access email, etc...? Would I need to purchase a data plan? I can't seem to find information about T-Mobile's data service on their website.
I would appreciate any opinions, pros and cons.
Thanks,

Unless you plan on using the Treo as strictly a phone and PDA then I don't think a data plan would be necessary, however, if you plan on using the internet capabilities of the treo, then yes a data plan would be needed. A data plan similar to those offered for the sideckick and blackberry would be sufficient and should not cost more than $39.99.

If you are like my wife and I, with a family plan that is about 2 years old, then you should be able to add "unlimited internet" for $10 a month to each phone. If you just want "some" web access, you can use the t-zones (5.99 a month or even free) and use the blazer proxy setting of:
t-zones (web proxy 216.155.165.50:8080)
You can't get streaming media, or other protocols, like ftp or https with t-zones, or use any application that does not have a proxy setting, but you can browse "normal" http: sites to your hearts content.
One of the "tricks" is to log into my t-mobile and select your phone. You get different options based on what phone you select!

Here's my issue--T-Mobile is the cheapest prepaid service out there (as far as I can tell--if I'm wrong please tell me). I like the Treo's features better than the Sidekick, but I don't want a contract and I don't want to spend more than I have to to get surfing on the web. Does anyone know how I can do prepaid for $0.10 a minute with no monthly access/service fee and still be able to surf the web with a Treo?
If not, I'll have to go with a Sidekick 3 because I need to be able to web surf from where ever I am.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

T-Mobile have a GPRS service available on a pay as you talk plan and is easy to set up which should give you email and internet without any problem.

Treo 680 & T-Mobile
I'm with you on your T-Mobile loyalty. I've been with them since 1997 and I've never had a problem with the service. I guess thats why we stay. In using your Treo 680 there is no other configurations needed. Just put in your sims card and go. Yes - you will need to purchase a data plan (T-Mobile Total Internet) which cost @ $30/mo. Prior to purchasing the 680, I called and asked T-Mobile the same questions: #1 - they don't have a clue and #2 - the rep told me that the Palm OS was fading out - which reinfoced #1. I had to remind myself that I stay for the wireless service not the customer service. Enjoy your 680.

I have T-Mobile pay as you go and just bought a Treo 650. I inserted my old sim card from my Nokia 6800 and was pleasently suprised to see that I could get the internet and email. I keep checking m,y minute usage and I am not not being charged for this. I assume it's part of the pay as you go package.

You can still use the phone, even if you don't have a data plan - you simply will not be able to connect to the internet or use email services. You also cannot access T-zones.
I'm using an unlocked 680 on T-mobile and am getting great reeption and excellent sound quality! Much better than the RAZR I was using.

You have to go to:
phone/star/email/menu/accounts/account setup
and go from there.

With the SK3 you're going to need a data plan as well. It's a specific SideKick Data Plan for $20/month. That is if you're going to use web access/email.
