Default Unlocking a treo 680 that's from another country

My brother got this phone from a friend who got it from her friend that either lives in Mexico or Spain I'm not sure which. He didn't want to mess with unlocking it so he said I could have it if I got it to work.

So how do I go about unlocking this phone? Obviously I am not in Mexico or Spain so I cannot go to one of their service providers (telcel) and get the code from them (and neither can my brother since he said his friend doesn’t want to mess with it either).

I did go to one store we have in town that said they would be able to unlock it for me, but for $95! Is there anyway around this?

Also, if I do manage to get this unlocked will it cost me a lot to use the phone? As in will it be like I'm calling from Mexico/Spain? Or does it not work that way? If anyone can help me it would be a big help since I have no idea how any of this works!

once it is unlocked you can just put your sim card, assuming your local service is GSM, into the phone and the Treo becomes your phone with no additional charges. When we travel abroad we always bring our unlocked cell phones and purchase a local sim with some minutes and voile! we have a local phone. As far as unlocking goes - you are probably going to have to pay at some point - unlock codes are always for sale on Ebay but I do not know if they are generic for all phones of the same model or if each "branded" phone requires it's own specific code...
good luck!

The unlock code is something you need to purchase and do it yourself (It usually comes with directions) or take it to the place in town and have them do it for you. No reason why you couldn't haggle on the price for unlocking.

Also, if I do manage to get this unlocked will it cost me a lot to use the phone? No, not at all, you could even use a 'pay as you go' prepaid card if you wanted to. As in will it be like I'm calling from Mexico/Spain? Or does it not work that way? If it is a 'quad band' - uses four different frequencies (most do) you would be using your local service. If anyone can help me it would be a big help since I have no idea how any of this works!
Unlock it and have fun. It is great phone/PDA!

A lot of unlock service from Ebay for $10.00. I used couple of them and it does work. Try to use the one who would send you a code after you give them your IMEI, not the one that you have to download the software (unlocker...) and get the code and use the software to unlock it. The other way they send you a code and just follow the instruction to key it in your phone

Hi, Would you have the procedure to unlock the treo 680? I got the code, just need the proper sequence of buttons to push.

Put in non accepted sim card
Power device in wireless mode
Hit call (with phone icon) button
*#*# unlock code#
Then press the upper left green button
Message will show that the sim lock has been removed from this phone
