Default Versamail question?

Ok, I just noticed that I have Versamail that came with my 680. I've been researching it, and am thinking about setting up an account. Do I have to pay anything (monthly charges somewhere, setup fee) if it's already on my phone, or do I just set up my preferences and go? Thanks

Update: Ok, I went ahead and set up the account to get my Yahoo mail. Will I get charged anything from Cingular or Palm to use it now?

You will not get charged anything by Palm. Versamail is only an app they provide for email access. By purchasing your 680, you own the app. As far as Cingular, if you do not have some type of data plan, you will get charged for data usage for the communication between your 680 and the email provider. I have the unlimited data plan so I don't get a charge (other than the cost of the data plan). If you do not have a data plan, you will get charged based on how much you download. My advice is get a data plan or usage charges will pile up. There are a few options to choose from in terms of cost.

I have never used snappermail. I've been pretty happy with Versamail since my mobile mail requirements are not that sophisticated.

Ok. I didn't think it charged anything else, I just wanted to make sure. Now....another question. I have the Media Max 200 + Unlimited M2M package. When I send and recieve email msgs, is each one counted on my 200 included msgs, or is it just considered data usage?

smf98aggie, its part of the data package. Anything sent by a cell phone number or addressed to a cell phone number will count as a message. But versamail, Snapper, and Chatter all use the data stream. I am a chatter user myself. Versamail might meet your needs. It didn't meet mine, and that is why I upgraded. As far as the "better" question goes, Chatter is probably the best out there when you compare all the features. It includes a summary screen for more than one account. You can check several accounts from one screen! And it includes a great IMAP feature that gives you the BlackBerry push email. Its always connected to your mail server and as soon the mail hits your server, it sends it to your phone. No polling every 15 minutes, etc with IMAP and Chatter. It also supports storing messages and attachments on the SD card. I don't use Versamail any more, but I still don't think this feature is available in it . .

Of course you can also just have your Versamail do a send/receive of email via your computer and its connection to the net during HotSync - not using any of your airtime at all...

Pretty stone age in this day and age of 'gotta be connected 24/7' but if you begrudge your wireless company dinging you for airtime when you so much as breathe on your Treo (and, frankly, does anyone really need to be that connected), then that method still works.

;)
