    Default WIfI for Treo 680

Anyone know if the 650 WiFi card is compatible with the Treo 680? Or is there one coming out soon for the 680 itself?

    Thank you

WIFI is not supported on the treo 680. It won't be supported/hacked for at least a year or more.

There are sleds and wifi cards but those are for other devices and models.

    Sorry.

I don't think that's necessarily the reason. Palm is concerned with battery life and they feel WiFi isn't necessarily a feature for the demographic they are targeting with the 680.

You could make the arguement that cellular carriers have had a say in the development. Inclusion of WiFi would certainly affect the amount of data packages sold.

That's what I used to think as well (see several prior rants). But if that's true, why can you throw a rock and hit a WM device sporting built-in or supported WiFi? I think it's an anti-PalmOS conspiracy! But hell, I'll be happy if they can just get Bluetooth right.

P.S. And in some cases I want to throw the rock really hard.

Edit: I agree that cost containment for the 680 is not the reason. If so, more expensive PalmOS devices like the 650 or 700p would have WiFi capability.

What I'm reading in a lot of unsubstantiated corners is that Palm OS can't handle WiFi connections.

Plus, in the US, if they offer WiFi, it's only a matter of time before someone puts together a VoIP solution for the Palm, which would kill some service providers.

Also, isn't wifi hard on the battery. Cuz I have read to about the cost, service providersand etc. But also that palm left wifi out so that the devices could have longer battery time.

where's kevin maybe he could helps us with why palm didn't have wifi built in or if the newer devices will?

I am not so sure that Palm OS cannot handle WiFi. My reasoning is that the Tungsten C is a WiFi device and it appears to have the Palm OS installed:laugh3:

I think the main concern is not just the battery life, but the goal of cellular providers to raise revenues. There have been some who have claimed to hack the 650 and get wifi, but, I've never tried it. Cellular communications is radio based, as is wifi. There may be concerns about the two types of RF interfering with each other under some situations. I think eventually cellular providers will explore wifi, but not before they determine how to exploit it. At airports & such, wifi is a serious cash cow for someone. Remember the days when you could connect a laptop to a cell phone and nobody cared? Now its a pay feature, in some cases beyond regular data plans. By the time wifi is an added feature, look for the providers to have their hand out charging for it. It would be nice to be able to sync or network through wifi though.

The issue is not between the PalmOS and a WiFi card. It's between a PalmOS phone and a WiFi card.

I am sorry, but the Treo 680 has the ability to connect to the internet. Why does one need WiFi if the treo can connect to the internet on it's own?
