Default 700P as a modem?

I tried scanning through the posts and did not see this specifically.

With the 700p, you are supposed to be able to "Take advantage of EvDO speeds on your laptop by using your Treo 700p wireless device as a modem."

Has anyone tried using this feature and compared it to a standard cable modem? I have Comcast for TV and broadband internet, and I am curious if in addition to a sweet phone / PDA / etc, it could also help in the home computing department.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

Get PdaNet - you can then use phone as a modem without paying sprint for the PAM plan

Cool. You do need to get the $15/mo data (PCS Vision?) service correct?

How are the speeds? I have read 300 - 700 kbps and up to 1Mbps, but mostly on ads. How about from an actual user?

Thanks ...

You need at least the basic vision access plan
Speeds are good - use the proxy connect option in PDAnet - to be sure of undetection. Faster with cable connection to computer than with bluetooth connection.

i can confirm as a user that the speeds of the power vision wireless service are anywhere from 100kbps- 400kbps. my phone averages about 250k. this may be due to my region but i doubt it. maybe some phone somewhere in the world got 700kbps, and that allowed them to say that in an ad.

also, i called up sprint about the phone as modem service (EvDO) and the rep told me that if i ordered the phone as modem service, i would no longer be able to browse the web within my phone, as the two services are different. when i asked the rep if i could have both services, she said no, it's either one or the other. that sucks for me, because i dont want to bring my laptop everywhere i go if i want to get internet. i need high speed on my computers, but i dont want to give up browsing on my phone.

so i figured i would use the one month free power vision service, and if i can't live without it, i will have to order a seperate EvDO like service. i'm sure sprint would be bummed on that, as people wont order their EvDO service because they dont want to give up browsing on their phone.

it seems strange to me, why i would not be able to use the browser within the phone if i had the phone as modem service. couldn't the phone act as it's own modem? i would love it if somebody could show me a way to work around this, or if somebody could confirm what the rep said is true...

i do like the power vision web feature, it's nice to browse the web on my phone. bummed that there isnt wifi on the 700p.

The rep probably meant you can not use both at the same time. I use the phone as a modem every day. I also browse the web every day which the 700p

that's what i figured.

and what is the supposed bit rate on the phone as modem? more specifically, what are your speeds (or anybody's)? is the bit rate on the phone itself faster than power vision? i think i'm going to order the service tomorrow... seems worth getting...

I am not sure what the rate on the Sprint PCS Connection program is, but PDA Net rate is stated at 2.4 megabits at the time of the connection. You will get slower rates using a Bluetooth modem.
