Question 700p looses phone network -- have to reset

Over the last couple weeks when we go to our church I notice when I get home my 700p has "no network" connection on phone network even though phone is on. It is not trying to connect to network. First time I waited for awhile and it never came on, had to open battery case and do a system reset and once it booted and phone turned back on all was fine. I checked with my kids and they all had ok reception on Verizon (company we all use). It was just my 700p only, my son in laws 650 was fine.

Well it has done it again today apparently during church service. But earlier this month and last no problems. This is happening at the building (a large church with lots of high tech stuff, computers, wi fi in building ect -- so I am wondering if that interacts?).

This is the only place this has happened and I have had this phone for 3 months. it does not do this any other place, all rest of phone and the palm os ok. Could something in the wifi at our church interfere with this phone and its connection so that it gets confused? Although this has only done this sunday and last. Fine the month before. My son-in laws 650 does not seem to be affected by this.

Is there away to get the phone to recheck the verizon wireless network after this occurs short of the soft-reset under the battery cover? I looked in phone preferenes and settings and such and did not seem to find a way for it to recheck network service when out of building and elsewhere or back at home where we have fine reception 3-4 bars.

So I am just curious what this is and hope it does not get worse. Other than this I have had no major problems with phone since I got it in early October.

Thanks

Russ Jacobson

Are you trying to connect ot EVDO or just regular cell service?

What might be happening is that the 700p is loosing contact between your phone and towers. Call VZW ask them to put a trouble ticket on your phone. That will tell them when, where, (maybe why) this is ahppening.

Just regular cell service. I totally loose connection with Verizon and it just says no network, is not even trying to connect. Phone part is still on but there is no cell service and it is as if it gave up trying when it lost the connection. I did not check while I was at the church building to see when it lost the connection just tha the last two weekends it disappears while I am there and never returns when I am home where I get on average 2-4 bars all the time

Ok will have to call them, I have never seen this before. Usually the all my cell phones (and this one except at the building i guess) just keeps trying and trying when there is no tower nearby. Does the phone finally just give up after trying for a long time? I left it the first time for about an hour to see if it would start trying again but it would not.

do you have any third party apps?

Do you know if your chruch has any special building material that blocks radio waves. (I don't know how you would know that but, I wouldn't rule it out as a possiblity.)

I do not know for sure. They have wi fi in side the building in large commons/cafeteria area, and internet/computer wireless setups in worship area. But I am not sure if building blocks it, all I know it has only happened when I am there and no where else.

Well If you have a wifi enabled device you could stand outside the building and see if you have a wifi signal. If not then they might be using a wifi installor. You can google them. What it deos is only allow the wifi signal travel within the building and not outside or anywhere else.

These insaltors have been known to block other frequency's. That might be contributing to your problem.

But you said your family and friends still have service, right?

If so how many bars?

Does your son-in law have the same service provider as you?

My Treo does not have a wifi device itself installed. I know they have wifi in building because I have seen some kids with laptops doing internet in building.

That was my suspicion a bit but had never noticed it before with this Treo and had been in many motels with it in last few months with wifi and never noticed the problem.

Yes. My daughter has another kind of phone (not a pda), my son-in-law has the Treo 650, and my middle daughter a motorola razor. Not one of them has the problem.

I do not know, just that they never get locked into the no service mode with their phones.

All of us including him are on Verizon.

Well this is interesting. I never heard this problem before.

Have you installed any apps to your phone lately?

A couple, not too many. I might have 4-5 apps I put on since I bought this, only one in last month. I have a few installed from the days of my older Palm phones (Kyoceras) but that is about it.

Just a followup. I talked to my son-in-law this past week about his 650 and he never had the problems at the church building. But he suggested I might want to do the monthly update of the Treo with Verizon (our carrier) with the #228. He does it regularly with his 650. So I did that late last week. Well I had no problems on Sunday. I also looked periodically and noted the signal is pretty weak in the building one bar to no bar just tower. But never got the no network signal in the phone this time. So perhaps this helped some bug that Verizon knew about?
