700p - Versamail -> Gmail IMAP
Hi all.
I'm hoping that I just missed the announcement. Has there been a patch for Versamail on the Treo 700p's so that our wireless e-mail will finally work with Gmail's IMAP service?
Thank you!

Gmail IMAP
Gmail IMAP works just great in Versamail. Select "Other" for mail service and "IMAP" for the protocol. You have to use your entire email address in the username field, e.g. "johndoe@gmail.com" and type in your password. On the next page, type in your email adress, set the incoming mail server to "imap.gmail.com" and set the outgoing server to "smtp.gmail.com". On the next configuration page, select "Advanced" and set the incoming port settings to port 993 and check the SSL connection box. On the outgoing mail settings, select port 587 and check both the SSL and Use authentication boxes. Type your entire email address for the username; the password should be assigned as you typed earlier. That's it. IMAP Gmail should work like a charm.
Cheers.

Thanks, chemgeek. I set up Versamail with your instructions. I think that only your port numbers are different than anything I've used before.
My Inbox in Versamail still doesn't match what I see in Gmail, and this is a function that I would expect with a true IMAP client.
Let me ask you...does your Inbox in Versamail match what you have in your Gmail inbox?
Thanks!

If you don't like your email box view in GMail/IMAP on your Treo, check your Versamail settings. Versamail can download all email or just unread messages (the default). I use the latter (default) to keep the email clutter down. If you download all messages, your Treo should reflect what's on your server. Under Preferences...Options in Versamail, you may want to enter the names of the folders on the server where Deleted and Sent messages are stored. This may be important if you have previously set up your email as a POP account. I also check the box "Delete mail on server after deleting from Versamail."
Cheers.

I followed chemgeek's instructions but it's not working for me. I get an "Out Of Memory" error when I press "get" or try to synch the inbox. I can send mail though. I have versamail 3.5.4 which is the most recent for verizon, I believe. Any ideas? Tx!

This is a known problem with Versamail when trying to download more than 7-10 Mbyte of email. It is possible to download this much email in two tries. See the Palm knowledge base on their web site for more details. I have my Versamail set to only download the last 1-3 days of email, depending on the email account, so I don't go over the limit. You can also limit the size of each email message you download. Larger messages will be truncated to save space, and can be fully downloaded if required on an individual basis. Otherwise, you might consider a third-party email client, like Chattermail.
Cheers.

Thanks for taking the time to write all the instructions. In the end, though, I found (once again) that Versamail just doesn't do Gmail IMAP well at all. Third party clients are the way to go if anyone wants to get serious with their e-mail on a 700p.
Anyone know if the developer behind Chattermail is still working at Palm? Or, was he laid off?
Thanks.

Chattermail
Chattermail is available from the Palm store, and works great on a 700p. I have installed version 3.0.18 (latest as of this writing) and it runs rings around Versamail. You can configure it for live updates of your email box via IMAP, and it doesn't seem to reset my phone every so often when mail is downloaded. I did manage to corrupt my Ptunes and Documents to Go apps when I installed it, but deleting and reinstalling these apps put everything right again. Native GMail IMAP service is included as a quick configure option. This application can also store email messages on your SD card, saving phone memory for other apps. Now that the 700p can support 4 Gbyte SDHC cards (with the latest Verizon update) you have nearly unlimited storage.
Cheers.
