activating treo?

I just recieved a treo 700 as a present. However, when i went to sprint to activate it they told me that the balance must be paid off in order for me to use it. One of my friends told me that there were codes for me to activate it w/o going to sprint and having them do it for me. Is that true is there a way i can activate my phone?? I mean i have heard of unlocking it, but i thought you needed a sim card in order to unlock it? and this phone doesnt have a sim card. If someone could please please please please please let me know, it'd be great.thanks!

Hi Jenny and welcome to ET:

There are services that can unlock most CDMA phones (GSM have SIM cards, CDMA do not). However, many carriers will not activate an unlocked phone on their networks if the serial number is not in their database. I believe Verizon and others agreed (or were forced) to allow unlocked phones on their networks, but I am not sure where that is at and who is doing it.

Now the problem. If the phone you were given is labeled with an unpaid balane I don't think Sprint will release the S/N and it may even be on a "Do Not Activate" list if there is such a thing.

Some gift....If the balance due was small I am guessing you would have just paid it so you might want to search around on unlocking services in Google and call a few to see what they say. There should be no charges if they cannot obtain an unlock code.

yea...thats what i thought. I went to 2 sprint places and they told me the same thing. But since i heard about the possibility that there were codes and all the good stuff, i figured id give it a shot. Thanks for the confirmation tho. Sucks cuz i really wanted to use it and the balance on it is ridiculous so looks like i gotta find another one. But anyways...thanks a bunch!
