Sorry to be such a noobie but can you give a brief summary of what each one does?

TakePhone is built on the default dialer and greatly enhances it.

2Day is a utility written by the developer of Takephone and 4Cast that takes information from various applications and places them in a single spot for you to enjoy.

4Cast is a utility by the developer of Takephone and 2Day that obtains its information from the Yahoo! weather info site and gives you a brief synopsis of it with pretty icons.

BackupManager and Resco Backup - the two top device based backup programs out there. I have licenses for both and use Resco Backup exclusively.

ChatterEmail - the big dude when it comes to email. It handles IMAP/PUSH and the competition is no where as good.

Comet - used for tracking telephone calls.

Cradle Care - put it in the cradle and forget about it. It does a few things rather well. I generally use it to monitor the SD card - when the card runs away Cradle Care sets off an alarm.

Cradle Robber - when enabled it sets off an alarm if the power cable is disconnected.

Datebook 6 - the latest release of the default datebook in the Palm OS stable. It is a heck of a program and one of the most widely used third party applications. It has no competition. Agendus works in much the same, but it is more "contacts" situated.

Directory Assistant - freeware program for getting phone number information, maps, things like that. Works well.

Documents to Go - the mobile paper office - Word, Excel compatibility.

eReader - for those times I have nothing to do and want to read.

FileZ - another great freeware program that has excellent file management capabilities.

Group Text Messaging - for those times you want to send SMS to bunches of people at the same time. It does not integrate into the SMS messages database. So if you use it, send yourself a copy of the message.

Palm File Browser - another freeware program that works with either USB or Bluetooth for moving things around.

Flight Status - keeps you updated on your flight information.

HanDBase - a relational database program.

Kinoma Player - makes noise and lets you watch noise - movies.

KMaps - Java based application that displays maps that allow you to scroll. It is also a freeware program.

    mSafe - security program.

Nexus - dictionary program with pretty pictures.

On Guard - by Northglide and it is the ultimate program for backing up user specific applications and/or their data files in real time life - a great companion to your daily backup program.

Palm PDF - freeware Adobe reader, works well.

PAR Pro - for recounding noise to the wav format.

Pay Off - no longer supported - amortizations.

PDAnet - for those times you just gotta use your Palm hand held to get your lap top on to the Internet. Try it and give it a good workout before buying.

Pocket Lingo - another dictionary - no pretty pictures - I like it better than the pretty picture one.

Resco Viewer - viewing pretty pictures on the device.

Call Shield - telephone call management.

Snap - taking bmp pictures of your device when enabled.

Teal Lock - another good security program. This one is undergoing a lot of beta testing/changes as we type.

Volume Care - makes your Treo noiser and easier to hear.

ZLauncher - the top dog of third party launchers.

That was a big help for me as well. I have PdaNet, but where would you go to buy, say, Palm PDF, for instance?

A "launcher" - that is a hot topic. The Palm default or built-in launcher is what you see when you list the applications installed on the device. The default launcher launchs programs, deletes programs, lets you copy and so on. It does an "ok" job, but it has limitations that can cause problems. Specifically, the default launcher does not allow you to store applications on the card as efficiently as a third party launcher such as ZLauncher. The default launcher is designed to keep data files in main device memory and the applications themselves either in main device memory or on the SD card in the /Palm/Launcher folder.

When an application is launched from the SD card by the default launcher, the application is copied to main memory and launched. Upon termination of the application, the application, the data files are modified (if not all ready modified during use) and the application is cleared from device memory and the data files left in main memory (or where ever the application is designed to store them).

A good third party launcher though keeps the application and its relateld files on the SD card in a launch folder, copies all of the files with the same creator ID to the device's main memory, launchs the applcation and upon application termination, moves everything back to the card. This means a good memory savings. This specifically means applications/files that share a common creator ID. ZLauncher and one other launcher take this a step further by handling multiple creator IDs which means it copy everything in the launch folder to the device's main memory for launching, et cetera. This allows you for instance to install Java to your device and then move Java and the Java application you are running to the SD card and loading Java into main memory only when it is needed. Without this ability, Java must remain in the device's main memory.

A good third party launcher also lets you customize the appearance and overall operation of your Treo.

The next question - Palm PDF is freeware and it handles Adobe Reader files better than the real Adobe Reader program. Ben

I'm very new to the Treo world, but my favorite has to be Google Maps. Not only very good maps, and xlnt satellite views, it has TRAFFIC on the Los Angeles freeways.

Palm PDF is a freebee available from http://www.metaviewsoft.de/en/Softwa...PDF/index.html

I see on his website he pushes MobiSystems Office Suite 7 - I tried it a couple of days ago and it looks good and runs well. I am a Dataviz Documents to Go user - V7 (free on the 700p), up'd to V8 and now on V9. They both are very similar and accomplish the same goals. What I noticed though is that Office Suite 7 lists is various "applications" in the launcher, whereas DTG only lists one.

I used Palm PDF for a couple of years and deleted it after going with DTG. If you do not need the capability of handling Word/Excel/Powerpoint files, then Palm PDF is an excellent choice. Read the docs though - it'll answer questions about the fonts option.
