Default Buy now or wait?

Hello all.

I’ve been thinking about getting a Treo 700p (Verizon) but before doing so I’d like to know if there is a reason I should wait? I usually like to replace my gadgets every so often, but I plan on keeping the Treo for a few years and have heard rumors of Palm releasing a new OS sometime soon. Basically I’m here to get opinions as to whether or not I should purchase now or wait a little longer.

Thanks!

If we wait until...we may never...

I wanted a 700w and got a 700w from Verizon. If I had known the 700wx was going to be coming out, I would have waited. If I knew...

I also have a 700p.

So the bottom line is, why wait? What will you be gaining by waiting for an unknown product that may never come out.

Ben

Well that's why I'm posting here. I have heard that Palm might be releasing an upsate or a new OS soon and would rather be on that boat as I plan to purchase and keep this for a long time. Unlike my phone (I upgrade every year), I plan to use this PDA/smartphone as my organizer and communication tool for at least three or four years. I'd hate to buy one now and then see a new OS released in a few months. Seeing that this isn't an important purchase to me, I have the luxury of waiting. And that's my reason for asking here. I figure if anyone has the scoop, it would be you guys. If I knew that something was a few months around the corner then I'd wait. If not then I'll buy now.
So my question stands; should I wait or buy now?

Alaex, my question to you is the same. I understand about not wanting to get something that may soon be obsolete but I don't think obsolesence is a factor.

In the event the long-rumored, much-anticpated, soon-maybe-possibly OS is released, I don't think it will de-value the current Treos, especially the 650 or 700. The 700p didn't end the 650 era, as Ben can attest. I can, too. I had no plans to upgrade from my 650 until a great deal happened to come along. The 650 and 700p are very capable devices, no matter what gets released tomorrow, next month or next year. Is there some functionality I wish it had?....sure. If I wait till the device with the functionality I want is released, there will be at least 2 subsequent generations out.

My bottom line: if the 700p will give you what you want, go for it.

It will take a bit of time to obsolete the 650/700p series - look at all the software. I upgrade with no blink of an eye, but a change of OS is one I take time to ponder.

I am no wizard and can't see into the future, but I am betting you won't see anything before 3rd quarter 07. And my prediction is, it will be a vga screen model running on something like a motorola flip phone. After that, look for Palm to introduce a new model with more capabilities. The only reason I am predicting this, is I read where they demo'ed the new OS to a bunch of industry types and showed them the new system ON a MOTOROLA phone!

Default Which accessories are recommended for the 700p?

I know I could research this inquiry on the web, but I prefer to begin with the subject matter experts.

I will be purchasing a 700p (Verizon) in 30 days. What accessories would you recommend for someone who wants to upgrade from an older palm, use all the apps standard on the palm, and use the device to collect all the communications received during the day, both business and personal. Maybe there are after market apps to be purchased too?

Thanks!

I recommend reading the sticky threads in the 700p forum. They'll give you an idea of what apps are popular, and their uses.

Also, check out the applications and accessories forums. They're full of great info posted by members. Welcome to ET.com!

I'm just being honest here, but if I had to do it over again, I would have gone with a different smartphone.

Not a 700w/x but something completely different. I'm the kind of buyer that puts a lot of emphasis on customer service and integrity. Palm's dug themselves a huge hole with the 700p. For me, I don't think they can dig out of it without a HUGE fix for some of the 700p shortcomings.

If I had to do it over, after five months and four 700p's, I'd probably go with a Blackberry flavor or the Samsung SCH-i730.

If you do get a 700p, just plan for the worst and if you get a phone that lasts, be happy!

Whatever you do, like KDALLEN says, keep coming back here to ET! This place is where you'll find all the best info and stuff.

I got my 700P back in June 06 and have no complaints at all. The phone works perfectly, and I love it. I guess it's the luck of the draw. When I got my 600, there were people complaining, and my phone was perfect. When Iupgraded to the 650, same thing. Perfect phone, and some people complained. I will admit there are some problems with the 700P, but nothing that makes me want to smash the phone against the wall or anything. Like with ALL electronics, there are going to be snags. I have friends who complain about their blackberries all the time. It would be a perfect world if we could all have perfect electronic devices.

As for waiting to upgrade to the new rumored Palm OS - will all the current software be backward capable? Will you be limited in what you can do on the new OS (for a while?). Just another thing to ponder.....
