Default can I sync a 700p with Outlook with CABLE only

Hi, this may seem like blasphemy, but I'd like to purchase a 700p to replace my PDA (Clie TG50) and phone. However, I don't want to pay for the data/update emails etc. unless I use a sync cable/local bluetooth sync. I assumed that was elementary. However, the Verizon salesperson swore up and down that was physically impossible, that I would HAVE to sync with their data package "over the air", so I didn't replace it. However, in retrospect, she flat out lied about several other things, but I can't figure out why she would have lied about this: I went from considering purchasing a $300 phone to a $69.95 phone, if she gets comissions, surely she really screwed herself?

Anyway, bottom line: can I sync exclusively using a local connection and somehow "turn off" over the air syncing so I don't have to pay for data transfer with a wireless company?

Hello, catdoc and welcome to ET. If I understand what you're looking for correctly, you want to know if you can purchase a 700p without a data plan and just sync via USB cable to your computer? If that's it, yes, you can.

The biggest concern then would be the potentially huge incremental data charges you might incur if you ever do anything with data, and there's a really good chance you might (otherwise, you would have stuck with the $69.99 phone and never looked at the Treo). I don't know Verizon's rates off the top of my head, but if you surf or grab email or traffic directions or weather or whatever a couple times, your bill can really go up. That doesn't even take into account that using data breeds more data use...in other words, people tend to like/get used to whatever cool thing the Treo just did for them and they do it again...and again. Next thing you know, your bill's sky-high.

My 2 cents' worth.

Default sync a 700p with cable only

I love the internet! however, my pocket book is a bit slim right now, so really, i would religiously only sync with my laptop locally/with cable (yes, you phrased my question a lot more succintly that I was able to!) for now. The plan is $40/month for unlimited data with my employer discount, but too rich for my blood right now, so i truly just want to merge two "gadgets" into one in my purse, similar to using a phone for an MP3 player without purchasing music from the wireless provider.
Anyone currently doing this with Verizon? (sounds like everyone uses sprint, maybe I should reconsider!)

My wife took over my Treo 650 when I bought the 700P. We are on Verizon. She does not use the web feature or email. Like you she just wants a palm and a phone in one unit. Nothing Else. So we have her Treo on a "pay as you go data plan". There is no charge per month up front for data usage, but if she does ever use the data features, we would pay $0.015 per KB of usage.
