Data Charges on a VZW 700P - Treo Forums

I recently bought my wife a 700p and of course she loves it. We are not paying for a data plan right now. We are avid text messagers. The first issue she had was with pairing her BT headset, then battery life, and now we're getting charged for sending pic messages. We took back the headset- it seems everyone's having problems with them. The soft reset fixed the battery problem. She selected the confirmation thing before connecting to the internet and she is still being connected/charged.

I called tech support and they said that smartphones like this one are designed to be connected to the internet all the time, and it "wants" to connect even when sending pic messages. The tech guy at VZW said he would put something in the system that would not allow us internet access, it would also disable picture messages. He said he reccomends a data plan as well as a message plan. You mean to tell me my cheap LG could do something for free that my Treo makes me pay for? At the time of purchase no one told me this phone wasn't capable of sending simple pic messages without being charged for data!

With all of your collective Treo knowledge please tell me this guy is wrong.

My wife took over my Treo 650 with VZW and I have a 700. I have a data plan, and she does not. She does not use the internet at all, and has never been charged, nor has her phone constantly tried to connect to the internet as she does not use any programs that connect to the internet. We do not have a data plan on her phone and have not been charge any data connection charges.

Do you have an email program on the Treo that is trying to connect due to automatic settings?

You said that your wife made sure to select no when asked if she wants to connect to the internet. Then she is doing something to activate the data feature on the Treo. The only way it try to connect is if you are manually trying to connect if there are no applications on the Treo set up to automatically connect.

When you say you were charges for sending PICs., do you mean that you were charged a kilobyte usgae charge os $0.0159 per KB on your monthly bill, or were you charged $0.25 per PIC message? If you were charged the $0.25, then that's the standard rate if you do not have a message plan to send text and picture messages.

There is no email program on the Treo that is connecting that I am aware of. How would I figure this out? I'll spend a little more time checking it out tomorrow. She has some pharmaceutical programs on there- that is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that could be connecting.

We have unlimited text and picture messaging on both of our phones (sorry I forgot to mention that). The charge is the $.0159 per KB. I'm going to do some digging on her software to see what I can find out.

So does your wife send picture messages?

isn't the wirelesssync enabled by default on the 650. i had to go in and manually disable the verizon overair sync crap and it doesn't try to connect when i don't tell it to anymore.

It is not enabled on the 700P unless you actually open it and activate the account

She does not, so I don't know if Picture messaging uses the data connection. That's something you would have to clarify with VZW. She uses regular text messaging.

i'm sending a picture message from my 650 right now and i'll watch verizon's website to see if my data goes up or if it counts it as a pic message.

took long enough. the picture i sent using MMS now appeared on my Verizon account as a Pix/Flix message. so apparently it worked like it was supposed to.

Now I'm intrigued. I just checked my wife's line on VZW and it says she used 3 kb, and she never used the email or web.
