There are a number of third party applications for Instant Messaging. You can read our Instant Messenger Roundup for the various players. Other options not included in the review are Mundu and the freeware Toccer.

Being a Mac user, I'd prefer to use iChat (which is AOL IM) on my desktop. However, most of my friends are on MSN, so I've been forced to make that my preferred IM client. For the past few months, I've use the bundled MSN Messenger on the 700w. I've used VeriChat before and enjoyed it. The only downside is the yearly license. Right now, I don't have any IM clients installed on either the 650 or 700p. I've heard good things about IM +.

I'd recommend trying before you buy -- and be sure not to run mulitple IM apps. I'm sure that could wreak havoc on your Treo. From the freeware perspective, I've heard Toccer is good for AOL but is a bit of memory hog.

I don't have the 700p (yet ), but have been using Verichat on my 650 for over a year now. I like the fact that I can be logged in with multiple accounts on multiple services with Verichat.
I don't like the annual fee...but I really use the program.
    Have fun with your 700!

Using verichat- which i'm some what familiar with on the enemy devices but on a smartphon/treo does it not tie up your phone line using the data (vision)

Verichat can operate as "always on", either by SMS or data. I have mine always on, data, and receive calls just fine. (on my 650/Sprint)
