Default help for a Mac user wanting to upgrade my 650 in Uk

Can anyone offer any advise please?

I live in the Uk, I have a 650 which is under contract and coming to the end of its 12 month life.

I am an apple user and I sync my 650 with Entourage. This is important.

I would like to upgrade my 650 to something like the 680 ora 750 but I guess the 750 is windows only?

And is the 750V so much better than the 680? really worth it?

I have only found Vodaphone to be doing the 750V though. Can'r find the 680 on tariff.

any advise please, much appreciated - thanks

Hi and welcome to Everything Treo!

You really have a choice between either the Treo 680 or the Treo 750v. The obvious difference being the OS and the Treo 750v's support for 3G. Both have a similar form factor, but I can't speak to the build quality of the more expensive Treo 750 as I haven't seen one yet in person. Palm uses different manufacturers for each.

From a Mac perspective, the Treo 680 is Mac friendly "out of the box". Upgrading to a new Treo 680 will be seamless and you'll also be able to use all your 3rd party Palm OS applications. The Treo 680 also has a new Phone app that integrates favorites, call log, dialpad, wallpaper into a tabbed interface. Very nice! On the flip side, you have the Windows Mobile OS. Generally speaking, the OS requires more navigation to get to things versus the Palm OS. That being said, it is very intuitive and feels like a portable version of Windows. In order to sync with your Mac, you'd need Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. Mark/Space is the only current solution to sync with your Mac. I haven't used Entourage, so cannot speak to the sync capabilities using Missing Sync but it is supported. I have had no problems to speak of using Missing Sync for Windows Mobile with both the Treo 700w and Motorola Q. The only downside to using a 3rd party app is that you might incur bumps in the road.

When reviewing the Treo 700w, I did a number of comparisons between the Windows Mobile based Treo vs the Treo 650. You might find this useful when making a decision on the OS. Here's a review of the Treo 680.

Good luck with your decison.
-Chris

thanks chris, very useful indeed. I think, from what you have said, that the 680 is going to be the easiest and quickest to get running. To be honest, I don't think I am going to want to use windows as I have always been a Mac user and don't want to confuse matters.

Also, 3G is only through Vodaphone and the 750v I think and I am on O2 here.

thanks again, now I just need to find a good deal on one. I called Palm Europe and they were out of stock just now!

Glad I could help! I think you'll enjoy the size/form-factor (lighter and slimmer) of the 680 and the new interface. It also features faster browsing due to caching (although I wasn't able to test versus the 650, one of our mods has confirmed this).
